Check Out Kenyé Pierce’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyé Pierce.

Hi Kenyé, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I’m Kenyé, owner, founder, and formulator at Skin Flo. I’m a mama of two who’s experienced my fair share of hormonal changes the body and skin go through during and after pregnancy. The thought of starting my company Skin Flo came about when I was pregnant with my second child, dealing with an itchy growing belly—not to mention stretch marks forming along with dry patches of skin on different parts of my body—was enough to make me want to cry. I was what some would call “high-risk” during pregnancy, so I was extra cautious about what went in and on my body during this time. That meant that whatever products I used had to be safe and needed to work. I realized after searching for that one product day after day nothing good was out there on the market. Products that claimed to be safe had a bunch of ingredients that were not deemed safe for Women who were expecting.

But then something amazing happened, which I always say was a sign from God: I came across a local vendor of body care products that inspired me to research how to make body butter. After doing extensive research on ingredients and learning how to formulate a quality product, I crafted a body care product that solved my pregnancy skin issues.

I started Skin Flo because I wanted to help other moms get great body care products that were safe for their pregnant bodies. I knew how hard it was to find products that were both safe and effective, so I decided to create a line myself. And that’s how Skin Flo was born!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been an easy or smooth road. Launching a business during a pandemic when everyone was to stay inside their home meant that I could not get out and promote my business at different street festivals and events. There were supply chain issues when it came to ordering supplies and ingredients. Social Media and sending emails to my newsletter list was the only way that I could really promote my business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Skin Flo products are formulated with plant-based ingredients and 100% pure therapeutic essential oils making the products safe for Mom and baby during and after pregnancy. My products range from body scrubs, body oils, bath salts, and body butter. Customers love the Cacao Shea Body Melt, which is a moisture-locking, weightless balm that turns into an oil as it melts into the skin keeping the skin hydrated, nourished, and soft for an all-day glow. It’s one of my best-sellers.

Formulating bath and body care products was an all-new journey for me. My professional background is in design. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Communication Systems with a concentration in web and print design. Before skincare, I was known for my unique graphic design talents in building websites and brand identities for women-owned businesses. I am most proud to have a background in graphic design because I actually use my professionally trained skills in my business. I am the website designer; social media designer, and I design all marketing materials. If I did not have those skills, I would have to hire out for those creative tasks. The thing that sets me apart from others would probably be my determination to build out a brand paying attention to key creative details when it comes to marketing the brand to potential buyers and consumers.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
An important lesson that I’ve learned in my journey of building a bath and body care business would be things take time to flourish. You may get a lot of No’s at the beginning of your business, but that “No” is not forever it will eventually be a “Yes”. I learned to focus on my craft and not what other brands are doing. We’re all on different journeys that cannot be compared.
