Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Stephenson.
Taylor, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I always start my shows off with the intro, “I’m just a Georgia girl who loves Jesus, my mama, and country music”. These three things are at the very root of who I am.
My dad’s job transferred my family and I to Allen, Texas from Cumming, Georgia when I was 15. You can imagine how tough it was as a new high schooler moving to a new state and a new school. I did not have many friends in high school and that took a toll on my confidence. My passion for singing had taken a hold of me at the age of 2 and I could be found practicing in my room for hours on end. This passion alone got me through those years of loneliness and lifted me up when I needed it the most.
At the age of 21 I recorded my first song and duet with my friend Korey Rose called “One’s a Couple” which hit iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora. That experience made me hungry for more and I began to gig around at places like Rockin Rodeo in Denton and Lava Cantina in The Colony. Now, at the age of 25 I am working on my first EP with hopes to be released in 2019. That is only the beginning of things to come.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As a Country Artist, the message that I hope to portray in all of my work is that of love, perseverance, and hope. I love songs that come full circle and also tell a story. My faith is a huge part of who I am and if I can bring reference to God in my songs and glorify Him I will always strive to do so. When it comes to style, the songs that I enjoy to sing the most are powerful tunes with an anticipating build. My voice in comparison to others would be a mixture of Carrie Underwood and Celine Dion (my all-time favorite musician and biggest inspiration).
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
This is something that I continually struggle with and it’s only by the grace of God and my amazing support system that I am able to do what I love. I work 2-day jobs both are Nanny jobs and I always say “I’m a Nanny by day and a Country Artist by night”. I believe that we all are given talents and passions and God wants us to use them for His glory. If we pray about it and ask for His direction He will always give us what we need and, in this instance, He has always provided for me and opened many doors along the way in order to help me throughout my music journey.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook (Taylor Stephenson) and Instagram. (@taylorstephensonofficial) The best way to support my work is to follow me on Facebook and Instagram and share my videos! Of course, this way you will always be able to see when my gigs are and what new releases I will share. I love meeting new people at my shows, so a huge way to support is by coming out and listening to some good old country music!
