Community Highlights: Meet Adryan Moorefield of A Colorful Me

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adryan Moorefield.

Hi Adryan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been working as a professional performing artist for the last 15 years. Arts and education has always been a huge part of my life and work. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and perform all over the world. I feel pretty lucky to have been able to do what I love so much for so long.

My business was born of something completely separate. As much as is expected when dealing with life…there’s no way to be prepared for the twists and turns. You just have to do your best to stay nimble and adjust. Sometimes you end up surprised with the results of that uncertainty.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a “Smooth Road.” I’ve definitely encountered roads that have minimal debris so it seems relatively smooth but initially smooth…absolutely not! There is NO WAY to anticipate what could possibly pop out of nowhere.

To be honest, the typical struggles that I think most would encounter: Financial, Operational, Structural. I’ll even go further and add emotional/mental struggles as well.

My business was born out of grief and loss, so I’m sure you could imagine the emotional/mental toll that I have had to pay. You start to doubt yourself, doubt the validity of what you’re trying to create! I don’t feel like many people talk about that part very often. That is enough to derail what you’re trying to accomplish more than anything else.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Colorful Me ?
A Colorful Me was created as a response to the emotional turmoil I faced after the death of my father, in the midst of both the pandemic and the civil injustices plaguing black and brown bodies. I needed an outlet to vent and show the world through my eyes. What started out as a blog, has expanded to serve as a refuge for people to reconnect with their inner vibrancy. We are all multifaceted and made up of different parts. Like light being refracted through a prism to reveal its many colors, so too are we…light…colorful. That’s what I want this brand to represent. A brand that showcases and loves on the multidimensional faces of Black and Brown people. A space to be unafraid, untethered, uninhibited to occupy space just as we are, whatever that may look like. A refuge, a safehouse, a mecca.

I actually have some really nice things in the works. I don’t want to give it away, BUT be on the lookout because it’s going to be extremely meaningful to the work that I’m trying to do.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Hmmm…that one might be tough for me. If I had to pick, I would have to say my first Christmas concert with the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas. I remember being so enamored by the lights, the atmosphere, the acoustics, the music. I felt like I was surrounded by Angels. It was really magical. I spent four years with that choir. It was an important part of my life!
