Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Chang.
Hi Angel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Angel and I’m the owner of Angel Thrends! I have a full time job that allows me some time to also run Angel Thrends at the same time. If I’m being honest, I started this little business of mine to pull myself out of a depression rut I was in. It was about six months into quarantine in 2020, I was getting restless, my therapist had just quit (not because of me), and I was constantly online shopping to pass the time and distract myself. I love wearing T-shirts and after browsing through Etsy for days, I just couldn’t find anything that I really loved. After deep-diving into some research for about a week, I bought all the equipment I needed and jumped right into it. I reached out to someone to come up with a logo and name and went from there. For a while, I didn’t tell any of my friends or family because I didn’t know if it would completely flop or if I’d even stick with it. I started making shirts and sweaters that I personally have an interest in and I began to love it way more than I expected! The shop officially kicked off on October 1st, 2020 and it’s been keeping me busy ever since!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Through trial and error, I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do things. There are a lot of shirts that I messed up on that I use as cleaning rags now. I’m not exactly social media savvy, so promoting and making posts for new products was hard for me. My sister, Christine, now runs all the social media aspects of the business. I wanted better quality pictures, so I bought some lights and made a photoshoot backdrop out of PVC pipes and some sheets. It took a lot of testing and crashing backdrops to finally get the product photos that I really liked.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My little Etsy shop is called Angel Thrends and I create/make T-shirts and sweaters! I’ve been collaborating with some artists and we have a bunch of new designs coming for the summer. I think what sets me apart from others is that I create things that I personally love and believe in. I tested several brands of shirts before settling on the Bella+Canvas brand. I didn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the product just to save a few dollars a shirt. I’m most proud of the fact that there are at least 100 people out there wearing shirts with my brand logo on the back of it! I told myself even if I end up not enjoying this, I would stick it out for at least a year. But it’s been four months now and I still love what I do.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Persistence and patience. I’m not a very patient person when it comes to life, so sometimes I have to take a step back when something doesn’t go the way I want it to. There are times where the orders come in slower than usual and I start to want to give up. But I usually take a step back, look at what I’ve accomplished so far and tell myself that one slow week does not define the success I’ve accomplished thus far. My family and friends have all been so supportive from the beginning and their unwavering support is what keeps me going! I also want to give a big shoutout to my sister, Christine, for constantly pushing me (and annoying me) to take more pictures and make content for social media!
