Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Ruiz.
Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Dallas native and have shared a passion for child development and art at a very young age. I remember taking child development in high school, and it being one of my favorite classes. I began my journey as a Montessori teacher in 2013 and had recently shifted to an at-home method to accommodate parents through the pandemic. Through the pandemic, I wanted to help create educational resources for children with the Montessori philosophy, so I decided to create Grow With Color, a children’s resource brand that aims to fill in the gaps of educational resources among all communities with important conversations that should be introduced at a young age using workbooks. I have so many more things planned and ideas for my business. I hope to release so much more soon.
I finished my Montessori Teachers Course at the Montessori Teacher Institute in 2014. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and am currently working on getting my master’s at Sam Houston State University in Digital Forensics. I’m also in the process of applying to the Xavier University and plan on getting a Master’s in Montessori.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest challenge with my business has been learning how to manage myself. I had to learn so many new things at once. I really wanted to do things the right way so I had to learn the business and legal side of running a business as well as learning to use new creative programs for my workbooks and to make my ideas come to life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grow With Color?
Grow with color is a mission-driven children’s brand aimed to provide low-cost, educational resources grounded in the Montessori philosophy to all communities. As the world shifted during this time of uncertainty, grow with color was created to help prepare and equip parents with the proper resources needed to continue their child’s learning.
With a Montessori foundation, grow with color uses structure to show new learning experiences while adapting to the modern way of life. The first Montessori school was in an at-home Montessori system for families in low-income communities. However, in today’s time, Montessori education is inaccessible to low-income families since most schools are privately owned, grow with color believes in making Montessori accessible to all parents from the comfort of their home.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson learned is not to be prideful and allow God to take the lead. Since the beginning of this journey, I prayed and told God I would leave it in his hands and allow him to work through me. There have been times I become prideful and make it about me and what I did and forget that the only way this was possible was through God. Hence, the stress and anxiety begin to build up, and as soon as I remember how I’m doing things through him, I begin to work at ease and with a steady flow.
