Community Highlights: Meet Heather Fujikawa of House Sprucing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Fujikawa.

Hi Heather, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband Tyson and I are the co-owners of House Sprucing, a furniture store and interior design company in Dallas! We’re growing this incredible company while also growing our own young family (we have four children under the age of seven!)

Family is at the heart of our design. We’re super family-friendly, and so we work hard to create designs and source products that are both elevated in style and functional. We offer those products to touch, see and feel at our new store which opens April 30, 2022. We believe that you can have nice things at any stage of life and that it can be beautiful and functional all at the same time.

I’ve been involved in the interior design world since I was a child. My mother was a successful designer, and she brought me along to her appointments, meetings, remodel walkthroughs, and more. Her influence taught me how to create beauty and to find it all around me.

Our career in design really started off when we were living abroad in Italy. We started posting on Instagram about our apartment and design and it got international attention from interior design magazines wanting to feature it. It was in Italy that we had the opportunity to travel to over 30 countries which has been a major influence in my interior design, celebrating time old design practices while giving it a modern Americanism vibe for an overall New Traditional look that never goes out of style, which is our signature style at House Sprucing.

We then relocated to Texas and immersed ourselves further in the design industry by building our own home and launching a design business. We started this company two weeks before I gave birth to twin boys! That business gained national attention from media, this time from TV producers, and we soon had a design tv show called Design Twins, which I co-starred in with my twin sister and is available on Amazon Prime. It was a fun adventure to embark on with our families and husbands, and it laid the groundwork for us to enter the design industry in a big way with such a great platform.

With the exposure from the Design Twins TV show, my husband and I launched a design business in Dallas and took it from a team of two to twenty in just over two years!

Our design company has grown so quickly in the past couple years! Our Instagram account has over 124,000 followers, we’ll be moving from a 1,000 square foot retail space in Frisco, Texas, to a new store of over 10,000 square feet, expanding the space by ten times and relocating to Dallas County this spring. In just over two years, the team has grown from the two of us to a team of 20+!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve certainly had our challenges, but what small business doesn’t? But, as much as possible, we try to find joy in the journey at every turn. We jumped right into scaling the business after Tyson lost his job. It was a difficult time, but we decided to get him out of his corporate job and dive into the American Dream to build something of our own. We launched something once again when I was pregnant and almost due with our fourth child. Growing a company and our young family at the same time has been exhausting, but super fun and adventurous at the same time! Tyson and I have always wanted to work together like this; it feels like we work all the time, but it’s such an adventure that keeps us connected and growing in new ways together; it’s been such a positive experience for which I will forever be grateful. Tyson, the CEO of House Sprucing, has an impeccable background in business, strategy, and finance, and I enjoy working on all creative aspects of the design and business; we make a great team!

It’s difficult to raise a young family and a business at the same time, but it’s been so rewarding! Our children have seen their parents work hard to achieve their goals, and we are so grateful that we can set a good example for them! The kids are ecstatic about the new store; they want to sweep the floors, tag items, and my baby girl loves to follow me around and style things on the side tables.
