Community Highlights: Meet Melissa Carrell of Leland’s Wallpaper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Carrell.

Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in the Ft Worth area. As a child, I loved creating art and building with anything I could get my hands on Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos, and Dominoes. I have always loved going to museums and art fairs where I could see the creativity and vision of others. I chose to get a BS in Interior Design from UTA because of the program’s significant emphasis on architecture. I must confess my hardest class, in terms of staying awake long enough to absorb information, was Principles of Building materials at 8 am. No offense to Dr. Mehta, but learning how Acme bricks are made was a snoozer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We all have personal challenges. The way I make it through mine is my Christian faith. I trust God to provide, I rely on Him for strength, I praise Him for blessings and I seek Him for guidance. Starting a business, or taking over an existing business, requires integrity and discipline. After 15 years of being a showroom manager for a long-standing Arlington business, I was told my boss would be retiring and selling the business. I was given the first option to buy a portion of the business and carry on the legacy I had been a part of. This is where the trust comes in. 90 days to come up with startup money and/or a loan, create accounts with vendors, work on leasing a space, and organizing a move was extremely daunting. Mind you, this is happening during pandemic shutdowns and delays. The day I started moving into my new space, there was no electricity because the city was behind in issuing a certificate of occupancy. My first few weeks were spent putting up wall displays to give customers an idea of what wallpaper can do, arranging a library of 500+ catalogs, and setting up displays for 200+ stocking patterns. For the first 3 months, I worked 90% of the time by myself while looking for the right person to help me grow my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Leland’s Wallpaper?
My motto is “You shouldn’t have to wait for a sale for your home to be beautiful!” That is why all 200+ stock patterns in our store are always on sale. Plus, every sale price you see here on our website will last for the life of the collection. I have worked to make sure we have the usual vendors represented but have also found a good supplier for European designer collections like Roberto Cavalli, Versace, and Antonin Yudashkin. My goal is to provide designers, contractors, builders, and the general public great service with a hefty dose of kindness and respect.

We carry installation supplies in stock for those who chose DIY and for installers. We offer trade discounts, a military discount, and multi-room discounts. We have a weekly special section for our deepest discounts of 40-70% off retail. You can check books out from our library for 4 business days and we will cut you free samples from our open rolls of stock. We also provide our customers with preferred installer information when you buy your wallpaper because we know them and have seen the quality of their work.

Appointments can be made for an in-home consultation. We also do mini blinds, faux wood, and wood blinds.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
We excel at Leland’s Wallpaper in recognizing wallpapers you may have seen on TV, social media, a restaurant, or hotel. If we don’t know what it is, we will research it and provide you with either the exact product or similar patterns to help make your decorating dreams come true. Showing us a picture on your phone when you come to the store makes the process quick because we often know what books to pull or can grab the roll from stock.
