Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Hoover.
Hi Samantha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been interested in helping people. My friends have always said I’m a good listener, and I always felt pretty comfortable talking with people. I wasn’t sure what that looked like, career-wise, but decided to pursue Psychology in undergrad just because it was of interest. As far as owning my own practice, I always knew I wanted to be my own boss. I’ve tried many different careers before counseling, including web design and hairstyling, and in both, I had dreams of owning my own company. It took me a while to find counseling as a career, and a few years after that to believe I could have my own practice.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways, yes, but in some ways, no. The easy parts of my story, to me, show God’s hand in this path. Making decisions, especially about career, are not easy for me. Every part of this journey to get to where I am today has had God’s hand directly in it. My biggest struggle throughout all of this has been trusting the path I am on. Throughout Grad school, practicum, licensing, and then starting my own practice, it’s been one continuous trust exercise. There have been many times I felt like giving up just because of how long this journey seemed to take. I’m so grateful I was able to stay the course because now on this side of things, I cannot imagine a better career path for me.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Thorn & Rose Counseling, PLLC, was created out of an overflow of love and hope for my clients and my passion. I specialize in teenagers and young adults who are struggling with finding their purpose and creating the life they want to live. The name was chosen out of 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, where Paul writes about the thorn given to him to keep him close to God. I believe we are story-telling creatures, and sometimes our burdens and life challenges can actually help us draw closer to God, as well as bring others to know Him. I believe we are all created with a purpose, but sometimes we need to view our story a little differently to see it.
I specialize in attachment and relationships, anxiety, career counseling, and life transitions for teens and young adults. Basically, if you or someone you know is struggling with belief systems, purpose, dating, or changes, you’ve come to the right place. My passion is helping people create meaning for their life and step into the life they’ve always dreamed of having. Usually, clients first come to me feeling burnout, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. But with some creative work and empathy, we can find a new meaning and start to heal your mental health struggles.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’d like to say that I’m a creative. So far, everything you see in my brand has been done by myself. I love putting together colors, branding, websites… you name it. I got an Associate’s in Web Design before I went on to grad school, so maybe that’s why. And even though I may look really put together, I’ve always struggled myself with career and finding what I like to do. Before therapy, I wanted to be a pop star, a veterinarian, a hair stylist, a web designer, a graphic designer, an author. I’d still like to publish one day, so check back in a few years, maybe.
