Today we’d like to introduce you to Shireen Khan.
Shireen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a classic example of age doesn’t matter when comes to fulfil your dream of higher education and begin a career. I began my professional career of being a family counselor at the age of 57. My story began 39 years ago when I came to USA in 1984 to fulfill my dream of becoming a Civil Engineer in El Paso, TX. Life took many turns, faced a lot of bumps, detours, and unexpected stops. Fast forward 1997, when my third child was a year old, I started going back to school to continue my dream, but this time the major was Psychology. I became very passionate about the counseling field and in 2012 I started my master’s degree in Family Therapist at Texas Woman’s University. My new dream was to help couples, families, and individuals reach their full potential. I received by associate licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 2019 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
As a breast cancer survivor, I continued to move forward with my dream of having my own private practice.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Launching my private practice in 2020 right after my chemotherapy and in the midst of Covid was quite challenging. For example, clients were a bit skeptical about seeing me online instead of face-to-face. But over time, clients started feeling comfortable and noticed the benefits of virtual sessions. One of the benefit was not having to rush and drive to the location and another benefit was families didn’t have to worry about babysitting or being late for the appointment. They could join in from the comfort of their own home.
Another obstacle I face as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate is that since I cannot accept insurance until I am fully license, clients have to pay out of pocket and that can be challenging at time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
It is not easy to seek out help for personal issues from a stranger, but when you do, I am confident that my expertise, compassionate attitude, and friendly atmosphere will allow you to feel comfortable in opening up to share your personal concerns. I will use my tools to collaborate with you to come up with your own solutions. My practice specializes in treating individuals, couples, and families across multicultural and minorities issues. My training in Solution Focused Therapy will help you learn different coping techniques to overcome any of life’s challenges to make your life better in the present and in the future.
I believe everyone has the potential tools needed to come up with solutions to their everyday issues. I collaborate with clients to empower them to find those valuable tools embedded within them to deal with their current challenges and restore or establish the positive relationships they are desiring in their lives. I see couples and families across the relationship lifespan, whether you are yearning to increase your marital bond or looking for frequent family conflict resolutions. As a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate with specialized training using Solution Focused Therapy, I have been given the honor to witness this powerful, evidence-based method renew relationships for couples and families striving to bring about positive transformation in their lives.
Alright, so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Over the years I collaborated with Muslim Community Center, Islamic Association of Collin County, and Islamic Association of North Texas and volunteered for their community as a family counselor.
I also support my local masjids in Watauga and in Keller holding workshops such as suicidal awareness and domestic violence awareness.
