Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Lindsey.
Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Louisville, KY, (Go Cards!) where my family and friends still reside. I moved to Texas five years ago because I wanted to get a fresh start on life and begin my journey as a mental health therapist. As a child, adolescent, and young adult I experienced multiple traumas. I was fortunate enough during these times to have found outlets in both therapy and in sport. My roles as an athlete and a client taught me how important it was to take care of myself both physically and mentally and is now why I view each client holistically.
After obtaining my graduate degree and state licensure, my dear friend Kate Fowler and I decided to open our own practice that is as unique as our clients’ experiences and backgrounds. Kate and I use a lot of sarcasm and humor with our clients because, sometimes, you just have to laugh at the things life throws at us. Together, we also obtained specialty certifications and trainings to better serve our diverse clientele. Our clients often come to us with concerns such as, attachment trauma, physical, sexual, and emotional traumas, anxiety, depression, addiction, eating disorders, life transitions, burnout, interpersonal relationships, and sport performance. My goals for my clients are to decrease how much they worry, improve their relationships, reach their performance goals, take back control of their lives, change faulty thinking, and, ultimately, love themselves.
One thing I have learned in my own therapy journey is that therapy is not a place for the mentally unwell, as we often see depicted so poorly in the media. I believe anyone who seeks therapy and wants improvements in their life are among the strongest and healthiest. How wonderful and brave it is to have awareness that something needs to change, and then actively doing the work to make those changes happen! I am so proud of my clients. They are some of the best people I know.
In my free time, you can find me in the gym, on walks around Dallas, relaxing at home with my cat, Millie, hanging out with friends, playing volleyball, participating in a competitive game night, watching tv and movies, or curling up with a good book.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I believe with anything great and rewarding, comes challenges and learning curves (and best believe I have had several of both)! I was fortunate to receive both great education and training on my journey to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. However, I received very little information on how to run and operate a business. I am grateful for my co-owner and friend, Kate Fowler, and our CPAs, Daniel and David Hartsock, for being supportive and patient guides on this journey. On a more personal note, one of my challenges has been working through my own anxiety. I remain in therapy as both a growing human and as a therapist who wants to provide the best care for her clients. Being in therapy has allowed me to fine-tune my coping skills, change my negative beliefs and thoughts, and improve my relationships, especially the one with myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Therapy Lounge and Performance Center. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Therapy Lounge & Performance Center is currently a telehealth only private practice in the heart of Dallas. However, we can see any client in the state of Texas (and soon to be more states)! I am the co-owner, President, and trauma therapist in the practice where I see adults and athletes. I specialize in trauma, addiction, sport performance, athletic injury, anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, and life transitions. I have completed several advanced trainings to help my clients reach their goals quicker including Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and have developed and presented workshops, classes, and presentations on a variety of sport psychology and performance topics such as, injury recovery, performance anxiety, resilience, mindfulness, communication, goal setting, and more.
The best thing about The Therapy Lounge & Performance Center is that it is a one-stop shop! Many of our athletes initially come in to work on sport performance but discover there are mental health obstacles preventing them from competing at 100%, staying in flow, or being “happy” outside of sport. Many sport psychologists are not licensed mental health therapists, therefore, any time an athlete presents with a mental health concern, they need to refer out to a therapist. But here, you can work on both simultaneously. This method applies to our other clients, too! Often clients present with a few main concerns, but come to realize, these concerns are impacting them holistically. Together, my clients and I work together to mitigate the main concerns, explore how these concerns have developed (likely starting in childhood), and have impacted them in other areas of their life. Another great feature we will soon be providing to all our clients is relaxing in our in-house Normatec boots to aid in sport and athletic recovery, or just “zen time” before or after a session. Talk about holistic recovery!
The main thing I want readers to know is that therapy is true self-care. It is not the face mask, massage, or reading next to candlelight type of self-care that provides short-term distractions; it is a long-term wellness investment that provides you long-term results. It is a place where you can feel safe to talk freely without judgment or bias, and allows you to redefine your life, increase self-awareness, and enjoy a life that is on your terms (without those pesky symptoms following you around all the time). I believe everyone deserves to have this experience and I would be honored to be on your journey with you!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is hanging out with all my neighborhood friends. We would play “cops and robbers,” basketball, freeze tag, Mario Kart, have dance battles, and my personal favorite, putting on plays for all the adults (even the mail lady) on a weekly basis. These plays were a true highlight of my childhood because it was so creative and collaborative. It made me feel like I was a part of something bigger than myself. Our plays turned into a “series” about top-secret spies infiltrating the enemy’s layer and saving the world, right before a disaster struck! This memory always reminds me of the beauty in play and imagination. I believe it is something all adults should continue to do, whether it be via sport, sex, game nights, dancing, making Tik Toks, or being a part of a group that inspires you and shares your interests. Play is an important part to thriving and should always be a priority (we deserve to have some fun)!
