Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Ibiloye.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hi, my name is Anna and I am the founder and lead makeup artist of Color Me Beautyfull makeup artistry. I’ve always enjoyed art and coloring (crayons were my first love) and I loved how I could help women look and feel full of beauty – hence the name “Color Me Beautyfull”! My love for makeup began while in college. One day I was looking through a magazine, saw a beautifully made-up face and I thought “I bet I could recreate that!” I practiced on myself often and developed my skill. What I love about makeup is that it not only grew my confidence as an artist, but it also was a gateway for me to become more confident in life. Growing up, I was always pretty shy and struggled with self-esteem; but with makeup, I walked a little taller, spoke a little louder – I found beauty in my flaws and appreciated the woman I was becoming!
The more faces I did, the more self-assured I became as an artist, and the more I started noticing how much more confident and beautiful my clients felt. This is my passion and my purpose! Another thing I love about what I do is that I get to be a part of the “magic” of someone’s special day. Whether it’s a bride on her wedding day, a teenager going to prom, or a woman going out on her last first date; I absolutely love the joy and the glow my clients have when I hand them the mirror!
I know what learning to do my makeup did for me, so I also offer one-on-one classes and group lessons to help women learn how to correctly and confidently apply makeup – and also encourage them to step out of their comfort zone with new looks. I have clients who have excitedly sent me pictures months later after a lesson just to show me their progress. I feel so proud and blessed to be able to help build women up and enhance their beauty, all while doing what I love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. I am still on my journey and still trying to achieve the goals I have set for myself. My biggest struggles came from within – doubting my skill and my purpose. But practice makes perfect! I would practice on myself, on my friends, and anyone I could get to sit down. The more I practiced, the more I became comfortable, and the more I realize just how much I loved doing makeup. I also sought advice and lessons from established artists whose work I loved and matched my style of makeup artistry
For those out there just starting out, I’d say to just keep going! Practice as much as you can and enjoy what you are doing. Reach out to established artists who you admire – there are so many talented artists out there who are willing to help! I would also say surround yourself with people who will encourage and push you, but also who will be honest and help you grow. I would be nowhere without my support system.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Color Me Beautyfull story. Tell us more about it.
The Color Me Beautyfull brand specializes in bridal and beauty makeup. As an artist, I have a special place in my heart for eyebrows. I’ve been called the “Brow Boss” or the “Brow Slayer”. It’s amazing how you can change someone’s life just by teaching them to fill in their brows!
Myself, and any artist that works under the Color Me Beautyfull brand, like to really listen to clients and understand what they are trying to achieve with the looks they choose. I also give advice and recommendations tailored to that specific client. Whether it’s giving away a lipstick a client fell in love with, curling hair when the hairstylist didn’t show up, or helping to sew a ripped wedding dress – I’d like the Color Me Beautyfull brand to be known for going above and beyond to make our clients feel beautiful and confident.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think generally society can be threatened by female leadership, and not respect female leaders as they do their male counterparts. Many times women have to work harder and longer to be considered for positions that men with entry-level experience are given. Additionally, I think the stigma is that women in the beauty industry are pretty, but not smart. I like to challenge the status quo – I actually have two master’s degrees, one of which is an MBA. My business background is helping me to create my own opportunities and strive to build my business to be one of the greats in this industry.
