Today we’d like to introduce you to Betül K. Yildiz.
Betül, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My blog journey starts back in 2005 for my school project but in Turkish. I started to write in English for my current blog in 2014. My main goal was to improve my English be more confident with it. Because I was working in internet technologies, I got my inspiration from Silicon Alley which is in fact New York. On the road my blog evolves more to fashion technology and mostly fashion right now.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t actually. I was still shy to write in English. I was always in this wonder what if I wrote so badly in terms of grammar. And I was hesitant to take my photos firstly. Now, I am more confident with my speaking and writing. Because brands started to work with me and my blog traffic keeps growing. If you are true to yourself and interesting things to say people gonna follow you no matter what.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Alleygirl.com story. Tell us more about the business.
My blog is not only about fashion but also technology around it. My blog was chosen top 15 fashion tech blogs by feedspot which is blog directory all over the world. I was also chosen brand ambassador for Robert Clergerie by man Repeller and Roland Mouret.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Some brand still care about quantity over quality this makes me sad. And industry standards still look for same shape women. What I’ve seen is if you want to work with luxury brands, you have to be skinny girls they always want to feature. And I always give more importance on my blog than my IG. But whole industry obsessed with single picture stories. I don’t think it’s good to depend on a single platform this much.
