Conversations with the Inspiring Brandy Glover

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Glover.

Brandy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the Makeup Industry in 2012 at MAC Cosmetics. This career kind of fell into my lap so I can honestly say that this career chose me. Before, I was a makeup artist, I was doing fashion illustrations and was going to start school at the Art Institute. Due to it being so expensive, I decided not to move forward with going to that school because I didn’t believe in student loans. It sent me into a deep depression and the only outlet I could find was going to the bathroom and doing my makeup. It really helps me cope with being jobless, a college drops out and excepting that I was depressed. I moved back home to Lubbock, Texas when things weren’t working out in Dallas for me.

I was still jobless and decided maybe I should apply for another retail job. My friend noticed that I was good at makeup and told me to apply for MAC. I went through two interviews, didn’t think anything of it and told myself that I wasn’t going to get the job because I didn’t look the part.

I decided to let the idea of getting that position go and was hired at K-Mart. While in orientation, I received a phone call that I had gotten the position. I don’t know what my managers saw in me but I’m glad that they did because it opened my eyes in so many different ways. I had no clue that this could be the beginning of my career. Doing peoples makeup started to become relaxing and my passion for it became stronger each day.
Now, 5 years later, I’m more stable in the Makeup Artistry Community and I’m really happy in it.

Even though I’m very experienced, I’m still learning new things and working towards being a better artist every day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Being in a small city didn’t always have its advantages. I dealt a lot with my pricing and people telling me that I was too expensive (I only charged 50 dollars at that time). Trying to figure out my worth was challenging because there was always a small voice in my head telling me that I wasn’t good enough to charge more.

Social media became a problem for me due to comparison issues, I always found myself comparing my work to other makeup artist and how far they were in their skills.

My advice to anyone who is pursuing being a makeup artist is to ignore that small voice telling you negative things. The place that you are in right now is only temporary, so just learn as much as you can while you’re in it. Get as much critiquing from people you trust that believes in your dreams because they will make sure you get to where you need to be in your skill set.

Last thing, you are WORTH IT.

what should we know about Brans Artistry? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a professional makeup artist who specializes in beauty, editorial, and special effects makeup.

But, I am mainly known for beauty and editorial.

I’m most proud of the transition that my brand has taken from moving to a bigger city and continuing its growth.

What sets me apart from others is that I keep it simple, I don’t like to over complicate my work. Staying true to myself and my skill set is all that I focus on.
