Conversations with the Inspiring Brittany Coats-Holloway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Coats-Holloway.

Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was modeling in bridal shows as an extra way to make money while I was in college at UNT. The makeup artist there was super friendly and so open with me about her journey into makeup artistry. I felt confident that if I’d expressed interest to her the same way I had my parents, she’d be willing to give me some pointers and advice on the steps I needed to take to enter into an industry I’d been interested in for so many years. After doing so, she invited me to come to her home studio while working with clients simply so I could just watch. On one visit, she told me about the courses she offered and by God’s grace, she told me I could take them free of charge. While taking classes with her, I started going on weddings working as her assistant cleaning her brush for $50 a job. Eventually, over time, I started actually doing makeup for her bridesmaids. I graduated from UNT and came back to Dallas. When I did I purchased some $20 business cards from Vista Print then, started marketing myself as a makeup artist. With all the people, my family and friends knew with little time I was working as a makeup artist specializing in airbrush application. That was back in 2005. I now specialize in bridal makeup, airbrush application and microblading for brows

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, although I was able to maintain clients, I struggled with pricing. It wasn’t uncommon for me to underestimate my worth. I put more energy into getting clients then charging my worth that I would often drop my prices just to get a job. On more than a few occasions I wasn’t even profiting. I learned over time that whatever clients are for me are for me and that I didn’t have to shortchange myself just to get work! My advice would do trust your talent. Know that you CAN NOT get in your own way and to follow your gut feeling when it comes to how you handle your business. I’m a huge believer that God will provide you with everything you need to be successful if this industry is one you’re supposed to be a part of.

What should we know about pretty face by b raquel? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in bridal makeup, tattoo cover-up and microblading. My clients often tell me they choose me over many other talented artists because my images show that women still look like themselves. I’d say that 80% of my clientele are “natural wearers ” or wear little to no make-up at all. As a brand, I’m most proud of my return rate. Almost all my clients come back to me after they experience my services. It always makes me feel so good to hear so many of them say “No one else can touch my face, but you”. Past my natural talents, I am convinced that it’s my loving and down to earth personality that sets me apart from others. So many of my clients have become friends over the years for this very reason.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I read a lot of books that deal with self-growth and the power of the mind. I am a firm believer that we must always seek growth in order to be our best self… I believe in listening to affirmations for success on a daily basis via YouTube… prayer also plays a huge role in my “doing my best”.

Pricing:

  • full face makeup applications start at $65
  • Microblading services start at $250
