Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniela Wolf.
Daniela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I remember walking into my first audio-video production class in high school. Despite me being new to it all, I knew I wanted to be a part of the film industry, but because of my personal fear and self-doubt, I never did much to start until the summer of 2018. I was really interested in discovering new music so I began supporting/promoting artists through Instagram by reposting their songs on my story. Eventually, an artist in my area reached out to me and shared his music that I found potential in. We got to know each other, and he encouraged me to go film during his studio session. From there, I put my low-budget camera to use and decided I wanted to capture video for interviews. I wanted to help artists tell their stories while also developing my shooting/editing skills at the same time. It suited me well and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a win-win for me, but I knew deep down I wanted to shoot music videos. So, after a few consistent interviews, I drifted to the music video scene and haven’t stopped since then. It’s hard work but it’s definitely fun for me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never been easy. I’d describe my creative path as a fluctuating line, to be honest. It’s really just a mental thing you know, sometimes I can’t help but compare myself to other videographers/creators. I get discouraged or I feel like people/clients won’t take me seriously especially because I’m a female. You don’t see a lot of female videographers or editors. Both the film and rap music industry are male-dominated, so when I was first shooting interviews with rappers, people would tell me to be careful–they’d warn me about males taking things passed business relations. Of course, it wasn’t something I wanted to hear but I had to take it into consideration. My advice for anyone starting on their own journey would be to have faith in yourself. If you don’t have faith, you have nothing–at least in my opinion. Regardless of anything, it’s important to believe in yourself and your capabilities. That’s worth everything.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a video creator and editor. I’m known for shooting music videos and supporting artists. I’m most proud of creating a community of local artists. My interviews and social media content has helped artists discover new artists. It’s great to see people you’ve worked with collaborate on their own together. I’m very open-minded and genuine with what I say and do so I try my best to show that in my work as well. No matter what happens, I continue to produce. I don’t time myself.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There’s this one app I use at times when video or image files are too large to send through email. It’s called WeTransfer. It’s literally a lifesaver!
