Conversations with the Inspiring Elle Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elle Smith.

Elle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been in the hair industry for (almost) 8 years. My journey began after working in dead-end administration jobs; I didn’t graduate college & had my first son at 18. I felt aimless in a multitude of ways. I moved back in with my parents & decided to enroll in cosmetology school. I really found my purpose and drive with my first mentor, Coby Archa (Coby Archa Salon, Tyler, TX). Coby pushed my limits; not only for talent but helped me find my voice. I am still very thankful for his influence in my life.

I moved back to Dallas & I now work at Pura Vida Salon for James Defrange. Whenever a hairstylist relocates, they basically have to start over from scratch. I initially worked part-time for Pura Vida, part-time at Parliament as a cocktail waitress and a full-time mother of two. There would be nights I could maybe sleep for 3 hours before I had to make school runs & back to work.

I quit my second job about two years ago. James found me on the office floor, crying from total sleep deprivation & exhaustion. He told me that day to turn my notice into Parliament & that we would figure it out. I am very thankful to say my career is
thriving at Pura Vida Salon. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of James and the entire team!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Keep it positive. The energy you bring is what you will get back… from your clients, your boss, your coworkers.

The first two years after school are the hardest. Find a salon that values you, your work and your time. There should be a plan for your career, an education program, and clear expectations.

If you’re a single parent, ask for help. It takes a village!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pura Vida Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in color, specifically blondes. We (Pura Vida) consult with every client for 15-30 minutes to really understand our clients’ needs/wants. I am most proud of our integrity for the health of the hair & what companies we bring into our salon. As a vegetarian, cruelty-free products are extremely important to me. I use mostly Kevin Murphy products and color- KM’s commitment to the environment, animals and overall ethics are inspiring to me.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Lately, Rachel Cargle (IG: Rachel.cargle) has been most illuminating. She teaches about anti-racism & how to be a better ally to POC. Molly Tranchin (IG: fashionveggie) teaches (gently & nonjudgmental) brands who are vegan & cruelty-free. Beau Bollinger (IG: beaubollinger) owns a salon & shares his knowledge freely. Edo Salon (IG: edosalonandgallery) is my favorite inspo account.

My favorite podcasts are hairbrained conversations, Girls Gotta Eat, Free Salon education.
