Conversations with the Inspiring Heather King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather King.

Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I watched my dad start his own magazine, and write about things that he loved and was passionate about, so naturally, I adopted the same love for writing. What really changed the game for me was when I saw the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada” for the first time; the glamour of New York, fashion and writing made my passion for writing quickly turn into the desire to start my own magazine and write about fashion and lifestyle. I took that passion and turned it into a fashion, lifestyle blog called “Miss Teen Chic,” when I was 14. It’s safe to say that I had no idea what I was doing, I was just a girl who loved fashion, and acted like I knew what I was talking about. Fast forward four years later, and I realized my blog needed some major revisiting, so I completely relaunched it on New Years day 2018 to what it is now, “The Brunette Cafe.” I share my heart behind fashion, my faith, and the things that I love and am passionate about in hopes that one person will find it, find comfort and know that they are known, loved and cherished. At the end of the day, I write to encourage others and help them know that they are made for such a time as this.

Has it been a smooth road?
To say that this journey has been a smooth road would be a stretch. Nothing comes easy, you have to work hard for it. A lot of the times that work can be a lot of emotional work, especially when your job is sharing your life with the internet. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to start the comparison game and look at someone else’s following, their content or their feed and think, “man my blog, Instagram or whatever it maybe, doesn’t look like theirs.” The truth is, you don’t need to have millions of followers to make a difference. When trials come my way, I have to remember the, “why” behind my blog. For me, the why was to touch a person’s life, even if that means just one, my why was to share my heart and my passions. Even if I don’t have a perfect feed or the same amount of followers I’m still fulfilling the “why” behind my mission, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Blogger of The Brunette Cafe story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a faith/lifestyle blogger. I originally started as a fashion blogger, but the older I got, my priorities and focused changed and so did my content. I’m most known for my “For The Girl,” blogs. It’s my favorite series to write because they are different every time. I write about different topics that young women are constantly facing; whether that be a comparison, dealing with singleness or growing in their faith. I’m passionate about sharing my faith and the lessons I learned throughout my life with others, in hopes that it encourages them and pushes them to be the best version of themselves so that they can go and pursue their dreams and passions. I always say, “transparency and vulnerability lead to freedom and growth.” so when you go to my blog that’s what you’ll see – not this picture-perfect life, but a girl who is going through this messy yet beautiful life and sharing the journey and lessons that she learns along the way.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I am a podcast and book junkie!! I am currently reading, “Own the Moment,” by Carl Lentz and it has hands down helped me look at my days differently, I encourage everyone to read it! As I said, I’m a faith blogger so, my Bible is something I keep in my life every day, to keep me focused on what matters, and to keep me grounded. I notice a night and day difference with me when I take time to read my Bible, and when I don’t. When it comes to podcasts I’m a big fan of empowerment/encouragement podcasts. For all my girl bosses out there; check out the podcast series: “Often Ambitious.” They cover everything from business, networking, making money as an influencer all the way to self-help.

What a great story. Heather is talented, expressive, obviously very intelligent and introspective, and of course, drop-dead gorgeous. She is one of the young people we’ll be looking to, to bring peace and sustainability to the planet. Congratulations, Heather King.
