Conversations with the Inspiring Jennifer Sands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Sands.

Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Picture this. A filmmaker, sitting at home, waiting on her next move, after being fired from corporate America for having a sexual affair with one of her married associates. Everyone in the office was talking about the affair including o sexual conduct found on social media. Believe me, this was the talk of the town. So, I, Jennifer Sands, the sinner thought, “Why not make a web-series.” Gayborhood Dallas is my very film first project. The idea came about when I discovered there is a market for LGBTQ web series on Youtube. The quality of the series in this market was somewhat fair, and I knew I could do better so I officially marked Gayborhood Dallas as my “practice project” to get my feet wet in the business. I didn’t know it would turn into a Micheal Phelps Olympic race.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is no smooth road to success. The only smooth roads I need in my life are the roads on I-35. Success calls for obstacles. I experienced many set backs during this journey but they only made me stronger. I never gave up. From those struggles, I am a better writer, communicator, director, and leader. If the road is easy, I’m going the opposite way. I like to have fun while I drive and I like to be challenged. The best I advice I can give young women who wants to start a journey is to never give up. Trust your process and never let anyone defer you from it.

What should we know about Gayborhood Dallas? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am known for Gayborhood Dallas at the moment, but I’m also a business owner. I own Lucy Mae Media, which is the production company that produces Gayborhood Dallas. I also have a passion for writing scripts so I have multiple projects coming up soon. I am most proud of naming a company after my hero, my grandmother, and hearing her voice before each production. The things that set me apart from others is my faith. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe women are going to take over the world. Women are becoming the most innovative leaders and I want to be apart of the movement. Sorry, I’m going to be a part of it.
