Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Hansen.
Lisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Rose River Bakery is proof that dreams come true!
Since I was little, I have dreamed of owning my own bakery. While I did not take the most direct route to achieve this goal, it has been a wonderful, twisty adventure!
My mother says I baked my way through high school graduating only because instead of turning in my homework, I delivered homemade muffins and cookies to my teachers. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. While working as an engineer, I attempted to go to culinary school four times but it just never worked out (not the right time in my adventure yet).
After moving to Texas to work for Boeing and marry the most wonderful man on Earth (both miracles in their own right), I had the huge opportunity to attend The Culinary Institute of America (seriously, dreams come true folks). Even in my WILDEST dreams I never thought I would attend the CIA! Well, with all the prestige that comes with the CIA so does a large price tag. My ridiculously supportive husband and I (did I mention he is wonderful?) started flipping houses to pay for school. In 2015, I graduated at the top of my class with a degree in Baking and Pastry from the CIA. Miracle number 142, I was also pregnant with our first child.
So, with my cute baby boy at my side, I got to work. I have been developing flavors and treats and am so excited to share my craft, my passion, and my adventure with you through Rose River Bakery.
What advice/tips would you give to an entrepreneur just starting out?
My journey has not been easy but it has definitely been worth it! For those starting out, I would suggest a few things to think about…
1. What do you want?
I ask myself this question almost daily. We all want a million things but pick one you are passionate about then run at that goal! Work and sacrifice to get there! Without this direction, you may be very busy but not truly moving towards and accomplishing your goals.
2. Be Patient.
Every “overnight success” usually has a backstory of years of trial and error and tremendous amounts of hard work. Be patient with yourself and your business and do not give up because it is taking longer than you thought. I have been working towards this bakery my whole life and now we have been open for three years. Am I a billionaire? Nope, but I am growing consistently, confident in my product, and having new opportunities every day.
3. Lift Others.
While I love my business, what brings me the most joy is that my services help others and spread success. I volunteer my skills, donate my products, and support other businesses & people whenever I can. When you lift and serve others, you are being a successful person and that brings more happiness than a paycheck ever will.
What should we know about Rose River Bakery? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Macarons Monthly subscription box is my favorite and most popular product. Each month I create a new, seasonal flavor macaron for you to enjoy! You can subscribe to a full or half dozen box each month. My clients exclaim every month’s flavor was their favorite!
My macarons can be eaten all at once or will stay fresh when frozen so you can enjoy them all month long!
I also love helping you have the perfect celebration by creating your dream delicious and beautiful custom cakes and custom sugar cookies.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Not to be cliché, but my mother has consistently be an example of hard work, high standards, and excelling in spite of the odds. While she is a teacher by profession, she rarely “taught” us things; rather, she lead and we learned from her example. Whenever possible she served, whenever possible she learned, whenever needed she physically exerted herself, and whenever we needed her she was there.
Whether you have a person like this as a parent, friend, sibling, teacher, spouse, or mentor seek to be around women of high caliber. Observe them and model the traits you want then turn around and offer the same support to others.
