Conversations with the Inspiring Mary Galbraith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Galbraith.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story has been a fast-paced and unexpected adventure from day one. I started my very first fashion blog at age sixteen expecting no one would read it. Shockingly, I was gaining some ground online and was offered an amazing opportunity to write for local and international publications with a focus on menswear styling. I was hooked! Writing and inspiring others with a focus on fashion, that was me! that was my passion. After a few years of writing my own early blog and working with other fashion publications, I shifted my focus to styling for editorial and print work. That’s where my Dallas adventures began. Being from a small town in East Texas, there weren’t many opportunities for me, so I started honing in on the Dallas fashion industry. I moved to the Big D with less than a weeks notice to my family (and myself) after being offered a job with an exclusive local boutique. During a period of about 5 years of working as a stylist for myself and boutiques in the DFW area, I had let my blog go, but just never stopped thinking about it. I knew it was something I wanted to do but just didn’t feel I had the time. It wasn’t until a year ago — when a store I was working for closed — that I decided it was finally time to refocus myself on my true passion, writing and inspiring others! And, I don’t think I’ll ever look back!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve definitely had my fair share of obstacles along my road, but what is life with no challenges? Be it long exhausting work hours, chronic illness, creative block or simply self-doubt in my own vision, there have been so many things that have held me back from proceeding in my blogging dreams. I actually struggle with several chronic illnesses that I’ve truly let hold me back for so many years now. If the store I worked for hadn’t closed at exactly the time it did, I likely wouldn’t have had the courage to start my blog. You never know what shocking moments in life may be pulling you toward a brighter future. My advice to young women is simple but rings so true, there was never a better time than now to fight for your dreams. Today sounds a lot better than someday. Also, I would have to say, trust in your vision and believe in your dreams, if you don’t no one else will. It all begins there.

What should we know about CapturingHappiness.co? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I suppose at this point in my life, I am best known for “Styled By Mary”. That was the title of the first business I launched on my own. It was a personal, retail, and editorial styling brand. The Dallas fashion industry was so welcoming to me and offered me the wonderful opportunity to make a name for myself as a young budding stylist just out of high school. It has been a bit difficult to step away from the image of a professional stylist and shift into opening myself up to the world as a blogger. The “Styled By Mary” brand has always stuck with me, but I’m proud of my roots. Overall, viewing my blog as a brand, I would have to say I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been entirely self-taught in all of my fashion endeavors. I started studying and learning everything I could early on in my high-school years, and have never wanted to stop learning since! As for what sets me apart from others in this industry (I hope) is my level of dedication and tenacity for continuing education so I can offer the best inspiration and advice for my readers and followers.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Finding a mentor can be a real struggle. One of the things I’ve found most helpful when seeking out a mentor is that sometimes you just have to pick out someone that you admire and find a way to get into their line of sight. I’ve had a lot of mentors over the years in the various industries I’ve worked in and almost all of them came from a personal focused effort in creating an opening for myself to get close enough to that person to learn from them. Networking is not one of my best skills, I tend to be a bit nervous in a crowd, but I have found that people will come to you as long as you just be yourself!
