Today we’d like to introduce you to Maybel Beltran.
Maybel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for the art world. I started out with drawing as a child and progressed into high school and did great in my art classes. I liked high school, but I always looked forward to my 5th period. I started looking into art universities, all of them well out of reach. Soon after, I started working as a beauty advisor for Macy’s and Dillard’s. I didn’t realize how much I loved makeup artistry until this moment. I started researching and learning techniques and put them into play at my job. I then decided to start freelancing at the age of 17. All I had in my pink and green makeup box were 4 foundations, 3 lipsticks, 4 brushes, a liquid eyeliner and an eyeshadow palette.
From there, I began my makeup collection. I saved up my small paychecks and played and tried products that I love so I could apply those to my clients. 2-3 years later, I slowly built my kit. Now, I have foundation shades for all skin tones, I have 20 lipsticks in my kit, my go to brushes and my favorite eyeshadow palettes. I just recently started my Instagram business page @makeupbymaybelle and worked with various photographers and models. From these photo shoots, I built my portfolio and I now have my own website “www.makeupbymaybelle.com”. I have been recommended through everyone I’ve worked with. Business is slowly growing, but I am hopeful for the future.
I might not have gone to art school like I had planned. But, I found a passion that I can see myself doing for a very long time. I love my job and I have a feeling this is what I was meant to do.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey with my career choice hasn’t been the easiest. This is a job that doesn’t seem as difficult as it actually is. We have to stand for countless hours and work with multiple people in a short amount of time. That’s an everyday situation.
But despite all of that, I wouldn’t trade my job. I love what I do and I look forward to every day I get to go to work. I say that if it brings you happiness and you feel complete doing it, then do it. Life is too short and happiness is too rare. This is your life, live for that you want. Be smart and realistic in your ambitions, but always strive for where you want to be in life. Get to know people, network, ask questions. You will be so surprised with howany people want to see you succeed.
What should we know about makeupbymaybelle? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I consider my style to be something completely different. I can do any makeup look someone would ask for. But my style is to emphasize the beauty someone already has. I strongly believe in individuality. I don’t want all my clients to look the same. Why? Because they are not all the same. I will customize a look to suit that person, the best it can be.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I believe the way you are raised can have a partial effect on how you will be later in life. I personally learned to be responsible at a very young age. Being a sister of 4 younger siblings teaches you to be selfless and take care of everyone else. You definitely learn to filter your words and be respectful in raising children.
At 22, I didn’t think I would already have my own business. I do think it has to do with growing up so fast, but I don’t regret a second of it.
