Conversations with the Inspiring Nicole Blackwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Blackwell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Twenty years ago, I was standing in front of a classroom teaching Language Arts to a bunch of boisterous sixth graders. Now, I’m ordering cocktails and posting pictures of them. I so love my new job!

Of course, my path wasn’t a clear one and it took me a while to figure out where I wanted to go. Cocktails for Mommy actually started out as a food blog back in 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. We originally called Eating Atlanta: Kid’s Edition and I wrote the blog with the help of my two young children. My husband and I have always dragged our children all over trying to find the best “kid-friendly” yet still high-quality places to eat. With that our children (sometimes very loudly) voiced their opinion (good or bad) of the restaurant, the food, the server or all three. So, I began posting reviews until we moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

We continued to explore Texas for restaurants to review. But, it wasn’t long before my children got just a little bit older and more interested in their friends and soccer than the blog. Kids!

But they weren’t the only ones with a new hobby. Until moving to Texas, I had never had a Craft Cocktail other than an Espresso Martini. After trying a Bee’s Knees, I knew I was hooked on Craft Cocktails. And it wouldn’t be long before I would be writing about drinks.

In 2017, Cocktails for Mommy replaced the old blog, and I finally learned how to Instagram.

When I’m not drinking, I live the “Soccer Mom” life, enjoy Moms’ night out, volunteering or going out to eat with the family.

Has it been a smooth road?
Unfortunately, I did not have a clear vision from the get-go. Had I come up with a goal sooner, my brand would have been more focused. I still got to where I wanted to be. It just took a little longer.

My advice to those starting out would be to determine your goal. Then, write the steps to get there. If you follow the steps, you will reach your goal.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Cocktails for Mommy story. Tell us more about the business.
Cocktails for Mommy is a website that caters to moms who like to drink responsibly.

I specialize in photography, mixology, speaking, writing and events.

I am the author of an upcoming book, Cocktails for Mommy’s Guide to Surviving Motherhood and Marriage.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Any industry heavily saturated in men is actually a great opportunity for women. If you are really good at what you do, it gives you a chance to shine and stand out amongst the rest. I find this to be true in my industry and I admire those remarkable women who have come before me.
