Conversations with the Inspiring Norma Aguirre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Norma Aguirre.

Norma, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
How did I get started? My story might be a little different. I didn’t have a passion for beauty, well, allow me to rephrase that. I hadn’t discovered my passion for it yet. I was a Mother/Housewife that ended up as a single parent in 2012 with no job experience or career path. I went from different jobs that didn’t fill my soul. I worked as a receptionist in different places, babysitting, housekeeping, and sometimes bartending to make extra money to support my household. I came from Mexico when I was 18. Since I was little, I used to dream of doing something remarkable, but I just didn’t know what. My mind had always been set to having my own business. I wanted to be my own boss. Isn’t that what we all come to the United States looking for?
Well, in 2016, I ended losing my job. I didn’t know what to do. I tried everything. One day, a friend told me “Norma why don’t you do lashes? You are always so worried about your lashes.“

Me being depressed, I said, “I can’t there’s no way.” Well, she did me a great favor planting that seed. I looked for a way to get certified. After getting my certification, I set up a room in my house. For a couple of weeks, I stood in that room looking, thinking, and wondering did I waste my money getting trained? I’m not even good at it. Is it going take me a long time to really get good at it? I had many doubts. I didn’t start lashing right away, I was so scared, dead scared.

I started promoting myself on social media. I was extremely blessed with girls trusting me with their lashes after being in business only five months. Once again, I was blessed, I met a lady which gave me the opportunity to work at her salon. I started working harder, lashing became my passion. I was so in love with the art I was creating and most important were the smiles on girl’s face after looking themselves in the mirror. But not everything that starts well stays easy. A couple of months into lashing and the state had changed the rules. I now needed a licensed to lash. I had decided to put myself in school. I used all my savings to pay for my esthetics tuition. It was the most difficult seven months I ever had. Balancing school, work, and not being able to spend time my kids was hard. I would cry sometimes and many times I wanted to quit. I started to think, this better be worth it, I didn’t spend all this time, effort, and money for nothing. I have to do something…something remarkable so that my kids can see that hard work pays off. I met great people in school, made great friendships and learned a lot from them. So, one day, two months into graduation, I was trying to find a shortcut to get to work and found a place that was for rent. I decided to call out of a hunch, to get more information, but that was just the starting point.

The desire and passion to have my own business was the only thing on my mind. I was so stubborn that my mother who wasn’t a believer started believing me and started supporting my crazy idea. When she was asked what she thought about me opening my own business, she said the following to someone with a smile on her face “ My daughter is stubborn and she is bold to do this, something I myself would never do, but here I am, she made me believe,“ she ignited a fire within me that lead me to my goal. I graduated from esthetics school in June 2018. I prepared to obtain and process all the necessary items to try to get my business going, paperwork, business plan, floor plans, but most importantly, I put a little team together of two people. Those two people believed in me with no doubts. Those two people, I went to school with became like my right hand. They believed in me and sometimes that’s all you need. People that believed even when I didn’t even have the place ready said yes to joining me in this great journey.

I listen to motivational speakers and those speeches help me with my vision. They helped me through bad days when I would feel defeated and tired. All those speeches have a common theme: Focus, dream, and take action.
I am a hard believer that this world belongs to the dreamers. I opened Pretty Dolls Beauty Bar, my little house of dolls in November of 2018.

Every day, I look at it and makes me see that God is great and that hard work does pay off.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, it hasn’t. Everything that will take you to a good place in life is always hard.

There were many struggles. The fact that I am a single parent made things difficult. Managing work, school, and being a homemaker was very challenging .

There are also people doubting you and trying to kill your dreams with their negative opinions, which was the hardest to deal with.

My biggest challenge was the need to constantly keep moving, without rest. I would leave home at 7:30am and not make it back home until 11 pm. I would be exhausted at the end of the day.

My advice to women is to keep going, you have to believe in yourself no matter the circumstances and the odds. When it gets hard, that’s when you have to be stronger. Even with tears in your eyes, pain in your heart, you have to keep going, and trust the process.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into pretty dolls beauty bar story. Tell us more about the business.
