Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hollingsworth.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been through a lot in this crazy life. I found my passion for hair at a very young age. I always love watching people create amazing hair every time my mom would take me to the salon as a child. As I got older, through high school, I began to fall more in love with the creative side of hair and the release of emotion and stress I got from doing hair or painting with watercolors. I honestly tried to go into to the medical field just to have job security. I tried several different desk jobs and things never seemed to work out and I was never happy. Finally, I was living with my Grandparents in Paris Texas, finishing my associate’s degree, when I decided to go to cosmetology school. Paris Jr College Cosmetology is where my journey started. I have continued to take many other classes and I also have my instructors license now.
I briefly taught at Paul Mitchell The School In Arlington, which was amazing and I am truly grateful for that opportunity. Being a single mother to my amazing three-year-old son has been the best and most eye-opening experience of all. I was working seven days a week and never getting to see him, missing out on all of the joy he brings. I decided to go back to doing hair full time. Rebuilding a clientele while taking on an amazing hair care line as well had been fun! It has helped me find my passion again. The love for doing hair and making people feel good about the way they look is really why I love what I do. There is something to be said about people looking in the mirror when you’re done and they love themselves even if it’s just for a moment we as hairstylist have the opportunity to change lives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is nothing smooth about the road and paths I have taken in my life. We all have our past and we come out of adversity a better person. I would say to other women that you are beautiful! No matter what anyone, including yourself, has to say. You are strong, beautiful and courageous.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I love all aspect of doing hair but I truly enjoy doing hair color. It’s doesn’t matter if it is fashion shades or a basic all over color. I love mixing shades and creating a placement for my client that is one of a kind.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I use an app daily called five min. journal. It helps me realize, even in the hard times that I have things to be grateful for. Walk in gratitude for the things I have and not dwell on the things I do not have.
