Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Kirby.
Tia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
How I got started was a result of my own journey with my hair. When I began growing my natural hair, I joined a few chat rooms and started to share my journey of getting my hair to a healthy state, showing the process and showing my growth and overall health progress. Somehow, people began to take notice and follow my chats and stories.
I soon began to get lots of requests for a blog and that’s when I began my original blog: “Me My Girls & Our Natural Curls”. I gained a great following from it and even though I was extremely thorough and detailed my subscribers then began to ask for videos and/or YouTube channel. For a long time, I ignored those request because I was too shy to do video but I eventually gave in and started my channel. For the first year of my YouTube channel, I only told those in the chatrooms about it (if asked) but I never advertised it outside of that, but somehow people found me in spite of and my channel kept growing. Through the process of growth, my channel evolved and I began to share not only haircare but I delved into makeup and style as well as inspirational content.
Now, you can find hair and beauty content on my channel on Tuesdays as well as my new talk show on Fridays entitled “Heart of the Matter”. “Heart of the Matter” is a platform where we get passed the facade of social media and the appearance of ‘I got it all together’. Guests come on the show to share their stories and parts of their lives that are not so social media friendly, of obstacles that would have broken or stopped them. “Heart of the Matter” harnesses the power of community, letting people know that they are not alone and allows the ‘keep it real’ moments to inspire, encourage and empower others to know that they can get through, conquer, and overcome all obstacles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Do smooth roads exist? Lol! When you are putting yourself out there, taking a leap to build there’s not normally a smooth road. Any and all bumps in the road are areas of opportunity for growth and allow you to see and learn new levels of your strength, tenacity, passion, and commitment for accomplishment.
I’d be lying if I said I don’t have occasional thoughts of giving up or feeling stuck or defeated but I’m always somehow encouraged by those who support me. It’s in those moments that I’m reminded that my journey and vision is not about me and my feelings.
My advice for those starting their journey is always… “Start where you are with what you have and make the best of it.” This is simply to say utilize what you have rather than feeling as though you have to acquire more before you get started. Don’t overthink things, take the leap and trust God to make provision and to bless your start taking you to the next level.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Tia Kirby story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Dallas based content creator, host, speaker & social media influencer. I am most known as a natural hair and beauty blogger on YouTube and social media platforms. Included in my work as an influencer & content creator I am a well-traveled, professional liaison, host, & speaker representing brands at trade shows, in-store events, and speaking at conferences across the country.
My mission is… “to inspire others to learn and to love themselves while enhancing their own individual style and beauty.”
I am also the creator and host of the groundbreaking talk show entitled, “Heart of the Matter” which airs on Friday’s via my YouTube channel. “Heart of the Matter” showcases the stories of triumphant individuals who have overcome obstacles that could have otherwise stopped or defeated them. It also boldly addresses taboo topics from a ‘let’s keep it real’ standpoint. “Heart of the Matter” is the platform that goes beyond the facade of social media to share the parts of people’s journey that are not so social media friendly. This platform was created to encourage and uplift others who may be going through or may have gone through something similar in their own lives. “Heart of the Matter” harbors connection, & community letting viewers know that they are not alone.
My hair and beauty content has been featured on Essence.com, Allure.com, HelloBeautiful.com, and NaturallyCurly.com just to name a few.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my willingness to be myself, my level of detail when showing and teaching via my content as well as my genuine care, love, and desire to reach others.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I believe that I’m most inspired by women who are not afraid to learn to love themselves, walk in their truth and realizes that their journeys are meant for reaching others.
