Conversations with Alexis Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Lewis.

Hi Alexis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My mama says she knew I was special from before she had me… I was a preemie baby, born 6 weeks early, and only one side of my lungs were functional… My mama says, “You were born causing a rukus, so I knew you were gonna be something.”

I was raised by my mama, “MeMe” (granny), and “BigMama” (great granny), three of the strongest women I know. They instilled God in me, family, love, and most of all perseverance… in other words, DON’T QUIT… no matter what.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing is ever easy; if it is, it isn’t worth much. I have had struggles since birth; born with asthma, I literally had a breathing machine with me 24/7. In and out of the hospital more than my fair share of times, beating the clock of death at least 3…whew… speech impairments until about 4 years old, and around 2 grade my mom noticed I wrote backwards….from right to left and my words were backwards as well and what I said didn’t match what I was writing to me though, it made sense… at first she thought it was me just really learning how to read and write, but it turned out I had Phonological Dyslexia, which means there is a difficulty in processing the sounds of individual letters and syllables and cannot match them in written form.

From the second grade on, I had extra help and classes and kinda got made fun of because I cause I could not read out loud, and to be honest, I still get a little nervous about it lol. BUT… I push through school because I had a “disability” made my defense wall go up; I went from being bullied to being the bully, got in tons of trouble, and it was said, “she’s too smart to be dyslexic” or “she’s faking”… truth is was embarrassed and just wanted to be accepted… until I finally was.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an absolute creative; I took what was called a “disability” and turned it into ART. I graduated from high school a year early as Valedictorian from Timber Creek Academy; I immediately went to college at the Art Institute, where I got my Bachelor’s Degree. in Digital Photography with Minor in Film and my Associate’s Degree from Brown Mackie College.

I am Photographer and a writer with thriving Businesses under my belt, Play Photographie Ink, which is my photography business, and Weird Production Studios, which is a diverse, multifunctional unit focusing on writing, photography, podcasts, plays, series, and film production and music production. I am the Executive Marketing Director for my mother’s music production company Suez Child Muziq Group.

My mom is “artsy,” so I get it naturally; I absolutely love anything that is art, museums, live music, pictures, etc. She kept as a kid around music, and that’s where my love for it grew.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
