Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Cruz and Anabel Moreno.
Hi Allison and Anabel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We met at the University of North Texas, where we graduated in May 2019 with a BFA in Fashion Design. When trying to find a job after graduation, it wasn’t as easy as we thought it would be. We decided to collaborate and create our own clothing line after not finding starting wages as acceptable as they should be for someone with a degree. We wanted to create a fashionable and sustainable clothing line for children, which has now become reality through hard work and dedication. We design, cut, sew, and create final quality, customized orders with love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We started our business right at the beginning of COVID, so that was our first obstacle we faced. We decided to launch our first collection regardless because we knew we would get a slower start on things to get the hang of it. Throughout school, our course material showed us how to make a garment from start to finish, but not how to start our own business. We did our own research on legally starting a business because some of the information we were given was outdated or didn’t apply to us, so it was up to us to figure it out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in custom clothing for children, where we make everything start to finish. We are most proud of the involvement we had in working with former Texas Ranger Darren Oliver and his team to create custom holiday outfits for his annual charity event. This amazing opportunity came after winning a runner-up position in a sponsorship competition held by the Texas Rangers and Comerica Bank.
We set ourselves apart from others by striving to be a sustainable business by making our items made-to-order. We also try to use second-hand fabrics or upcycle old clothing to create something new. Using these methods, we eliminate the possibility of excess fabric from ending up in landfills due to mass production, which has been a problem within the industry for the past decades.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking can be beneficial in many ways for people if they’re trying to ultimately reach a goal. Starting our business, we had no knowledge of where to begin. We had to figure out our own business plan and took many risks because we weren’t sure if we were sending out the correct paperwork or understood the requirements for each step. We were able to figure out all the necessary elements to launch our business after much research and dedication to reach our final goal.
