Conversations with Angela Peery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Peery.

Hi Angela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It really comes down to it being an interest since I was young. I remember my parents had a video camera and I’d take it to school every day and record random stuff. I had multiple cameras, I was always the one at parties or events taking pictures! I was obsessed with disposable cameras, and I’m pretty sure my mom was taking me in to develop them every week.

Growing up I always had it in the back of my mind that doing photography was unrealistic, and pretty much impossible for me to have as a “job.” So, I continued to do it here and there, but just for fun.

In 2016, my husband bought me my first DSLR camera. I remember being SO excited. With having a full-time job, I never really had a chance to play with it, so most of the time it sat in my closet. Fast forward to 2018, we had our son! I had quit my job to stay home with the baby & it was a huge change for me considering I had worked since I was 16. It wasn’t until 2019 that I decided it was time to pull that baby out and see what I could do! I needed to find myself a hobby!.

I slowly started taking photos of families and trying to learn the basics of my camera. Soon enough people were sending people my way for the photos, and the rest is history! I continue to educate myself and learn every day. This whole thing has been such a blessing, and I’m so grateful for everything that’s happened in the last few years since starting.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road is far from what it has been. From starting out knowing nothing about my camera to trying to find my editing style has been a roller coaster of emotions! The mental toll it took to get where I am today is no joke. I almost quit a few times. At the end of the day, I knew that I had to keep pushing because that’s just how I am. I set goals, I met them! I continue to set goals and be better than I was at the previous shoot. More importantly, I knew Photography was something I loved and I wasn’t going to stop until I figured it out! I am still learning every day, but every day I keep trying to be better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Family’s, Couples, Weddings & Boudoir are what I specialize in but if someone needs pictures, no matter what the occasion is, I’ll most likely do it! But those 4 are my main areas that I shoot on a daily basis.

Sometimes I’m really hard on myself, telling myself I can do better, be better. But I really am proud of myself and the small business I’ve built over the last 3.5 years. My biggest and proudest moment though would probably be voted as the Top 3 best in Ellis County 2020 and in 2021 I was Voted Best in Ellis County! As we all know there are many, many photographers. So many creatives that have different editing styles and vibes! There are SO many other photographers I admire in the DFW area and I’m just so happy to be a part of this community!

2022 I plan to just keep doing what I’m doing, probably do a lot more styled shoots! I’ve found styled shoots keep me being extra creative and keeps my mind open to doing new things.

I think what separates me from other photographers is that when you come to me for photos, I promise to make you comfortable and build a relationship that we can continue to keep building after just taking your photos. I really, really do love what I do every day. My clients become family, and I absolutely love each and every single one of them. I tell them all the time how grateful I am that they choose me to be their photographer. It really does mean more than they will ever know.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband definitely deserves all the credit. He is always supporting my crazy ideas, telling me that he’s proud of what I’ve built in the last 3 years. Always building me random photography props and never, ever complains. I definitely would have quit as soon as I started if it wasn’t for him telling me I was great, even when I definitely wasn’t.

And of course, my clients. You guys know you have my heart. You are the reason I keep going, the reason I’m able to help support my little family, and one of the reasons I feel like I’m actually doing something amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
