Today we’d like to introduce you to David Acosta.
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the northeastern United States with the dream of becoming a policeman. As a kid growing up, I had a passion for martial arts and fitness. I knew those skillsets would directly aid in my ability to safeguard the community as a crime fighter.
At the age of twenty, I started my career as a police officer in a violent city in the state of Connecticut. Throughout the course of my career, I worked in a myriad of capacities ranging from patrol to street crime, narcotics, SWAT, federal gang, and fugitive task forces, and finally finished up my career at the police academy.
I retired from law enforcement in August of 2021 after 17 years of policing. I wanted to continue to serve good Americans and felt the best way I could do so was by passing on lessons I had learned from my professional and personal background. As a martial artist and a police officer, I learned a lot about violence. What was apparent to me was that most victims I encountered as a cop, shared something in common… that singular commonality was that they’d essentially volunteered to be a victim of violence by outsourcing their ability to defend themselves. They were completely reliant on an external source of physical protection from harm. I felt that the knowledge I’ve gained over the span of my lifetime could be of great benefit for many Americans.
So, initially upon retiring, I worked as an instructor for different tactical training companies in the industry. After doing so for roughly eighteen months, I was encouraged by friends and mentors to venture out on my own. Those friends and mentors acted as an affirmation of what I knew I ultimately wanted and need to do. Consequently, I launched Allegiance Defense Solutions, LLC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not all. Aside from the normal entrepreneurial start-up difficulties, I failed to realize how flooded the industry and market is with other training companies that are selling “snake oil” to good Americans who are ignorant to what good training is and looks like.
There are tons of companies and organizations that have supporters that invest capital into a brand’s marketing ability. The high-end marketing acts as attractive clickbait that sells “enter-train-ment” disguised as training. Unbeknownst to the consumer, they end up paying more money for a low-quality products/service and don’t realize they’re walking away with a false sense of confidence. The uninitiated consumer assumes that a specific resume or title in a resume automatically translates to an individual or group of individuals as being subject matter experts.
Unfortunately, because consumers don’t know what wrong looks like, it’s difficult for them to identify what right looks like… What looks “right” is flashy high-end pictures, videos, websites, with large social media followings. The reality is that all that means little in relation to what right is for specific end-users and consumers.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I travel the state of Texas and the country teaching good Americans how to be better prepared to defend themselves and their families. I’ve developed a curriculum to span the spectrum of what violence is, who it happens to, as well as where, when why, and how it happens. In consideration of this understanding, I developed a system to teach good Americans how to deter, detect, deny, delay, defuse, and defend against real harm caused by violent encounters. Most say I’m known for a direct and passionate no-nonsense approach to teaching that provides an in-depth view and understanding across the spectrum of violent encounters.
The thing I’m most proud of is my faith in God, the love I have for my family, and the pride I have in making good Americans more capable of defending themselves and others.
What sets me apart from others is the passion, drive, discipline, and grit to do what needs to be done, day in and day out, to accomplish my goals.
What do you think about luck?
As a Christian, I don’t believe in “luck”. I believe there is not a rogue molecule in all the universe that operates or functions outside the decree of my sovereign creator. Proverbs chapter 16 verse 33 states, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.”
I believe that all the good things, as well as the bad things, happen are intended to build and expose our character. Romans chapter 8 verse 28 states, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, [a] for those who are called according to his purpose.”
I choose to believe in providence.
