Today we’d like to introduce you to Erykah Franklin.
Hi Erykah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
When I was 16, I received my first camera, I was inspired to get into photography through travel photographers I saw on Instagram. From there I started capturing a little bit of everything from my cheer competitions to nature to having my friend model for me! I’ve been teaching myself along the way with a little help from YouTube, and 2 photography classes I took in high school. Senior year I decided to go to UNT to pursue a degree in photography, but when I was about three semesters in the program, I decided it wasn’t for me, so I ended up getting my degree in anthropology (the study of human societies and culture) and partnering it with my photography.
During my time at UNT, I did senior grad portraits for some of my friends and sorority sisters, which ultimately led to me getting more into portrait photography. I loved hyping my people up during a photoshoot and trying new poses and ideas they had!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but we eventually learn how to drive through the tough spots too. (I-35 taught me that one) There are a lot of struggles that come with being creative and trying to start up/run your own business; there were non-believers, some not-very-nice clients, equipment is EXPENSIVE, and even my mind became one of my worst enemies. But in every struggle, I’ve just listed I’ve eventually overcome, and if not that I’m definitely working on overcoming it. I have a quote as my iPad wallpaper and the quote says, “Just because you’re struggling, doesn’t mean you are failing.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative photographer, specializing in portraits and nature photography, but I would love to expand into documentary and travel photography. I’m well known for my “hype skills” and the enthusiasm I bring to my clients/models! I am most proud of the connections I have made through photography, whether friend, client or business partner I’ve met some incredibly talented individuals!
What sets me apart from others is my ability to bring life to a room with just a smile! I always radiate positivity wherever I am and I believe having someone who can bring warmth and comfort into a space is the key to a great shoot and future connection!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
The photography/creative community has been AWESOME in Dallas, I have met so many talented friends here and I just love the creative community overall. My least favorite thing about Dallas is the drivers and the roads- respectfully both are terrible.
