Today we’d like to introduce you to JusttJosiah.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have had a love for music since a child. I got a toy keyboard when I was 5 and since then music has always my favorite thing and the thing that felt the most natural to me. As a teenager, I began making beats on FL Studios. I still had no intention on making it a profession, but it was what I loved to do the most. I didn’t began writing lyrics until the age of 21 when I was dealing with some heavy emotions due to a sudden change in my life. I didn’t know how to express it, so I just started writing to get the thoughts out of my head. During that time, I listened to few specific albums daily that made me feel like everything would be okay. I had the thought then listening to music helps me feel better about what I’m going through, and writing does too, then nothing was stopping me from using what I wrote to pass that feeling along to someone else who might need it as well. That’s what has been driving me ever since. A chance to make someone’s life a little easier by expressing myself. Today I’m an independent artist focused on creating and sharing art that can translate through time and still remain relevant and relatable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To say that the road has been bumpy would be an understatement. The thing I have struggled the most with is my mental health. I spent a lot of time trying to balance being a father, an artist, a friend, and everything else to everyone else without really taking the necessary time to make sure I was being who I needed to be for myself. As much as I want my words to help others, if I’m not taking care of myself properly, then I won’t be of much help to anyone at all. That’s something that I’ve had the time to accept and master in the past year.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In short, I write and perform lyrics that feel like the truest expression of myself at that time. For me, writing is all about authenticity and feeling. I’ve been writing for almost 10 years now, so I have full confidence in my ability to write a song at any time. But every word has to feel right for me. The right pocket, tone, energy is essential for me. It’s kind of like I’m putting together a puzzle and making sure every piece fits perfectly as I feel it should. This may not always translate to what someone else thinks is my best work but I want to walk away from every track believing that I’ve created the best version of it and that it will serve its purpose… Whatever purpose that may be.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the support that I see creatives give and receive regularly. No matter how efficient we make ourselves, no one can do everything alone. It’s nice to see that so many of us want to see each other win. Even if it may not be the case for all of us. I definitely dislike the huge amount of traffic here at almost any time. I’m a patient man but Dallas drivers are wild. I prefer to be on the roads when they’re empty.
