Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Lowe.
Hi Judy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I was still teaching when my husband’s health started to become the center of our lives. My children’s stories are based on my true experience but written in a fiction format. The inspiration behind my first story was my husband’s health issues with prostate cancer. After getting Sam in bed one night, then I got in bed, I talked to Jesus and my dad, that a soft gentle blink of a little white light appeared in the corner of the ceiling. It didn’t rattle my nerves. Several nights passed without thinking about that little light, and then another night came along with the appearance of the little light again and then appearing in the morning as I was waking up. I greeted it and from then on, even after Sam’s passing, that the little light continues to appear in the evening, in the morning, and sometimes during the day. I truly feel that the little light was sent to me to help me get through all that was going to take place. A couple of years after Sam passed that my loving mother came into my home with everything she had. She was in dementia going into Alzheimer’s. Going around that for the second time and eventually hospice, that little light has never left me. I am so grateful for its continual presence. It is so reassuring and comforting in these times.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Initially, it wasn’t a smooth road for me, but fortunately, a friend connected me with someone who knew many of the ups and downs, and everything in between. I continually utilize her knowledge, skills, and expertise going forward. The technology, terminology, and many skills are definitely a work in progress. Through the ups and downs and in between, she has been so patient with me. Through it all, we have developed a close friendship.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I started teaching in the Dallas ISD in 1966 and retired in 2017 with 50 years of teaching. After teaching elementary classroom music for several years, the principal asked me to get training for English As A Second Language for the Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese children who would be entering the United States. I traveled to five different elementary schools to work with those respective children and their parents in the evening to help them learn the English language so they could communicate with others for jobs and life. After three years of helping Asian children and adults develop their English vocabulary, the principal asked me to get training to help implement the Talented and Gifted Program. I helped write some of the curriculum and implement the TAG program in the late 1970s. All of my educational experiences working with children have contributed to my creativity and discovery of some of my talents, mingled with some life experiences.
I am most proud of the educational connections I’ve made with children I’ve taught, and the children’s stories I’ve written based on true life experiences in a fiction format.
I participate in several author events as well as connect with customers in the National Authors in Grocery Stores Program.
I have published 3 books in several languages:
• The Little White Light
• MJ’s New Friend
• An Almost Very Scary Day
• La pequeña luz blanca
• El nuevo amigo de MJ
• Un día casi muy aterrador
• La petite lumière blanche
What are your plans for the future?
I look forward to reading again to children in a school setting, the Ronald McDonald House, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, and the MD Anderson Cancer Hospital for Children.
I am looking forward to finishing my next story and sharing the story of my stories.
