Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Sterling.
Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
To start, my name is Lauren Sterling and I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I’ve always known that I wanted to do something that gave me a sense of fulfillment, and a way to escape my everyday stresses. I currently teach first grade in Mansfield ISD and absolutely love my career, but dreamt of being able to run my own business one day. In 2021, I experienced severe depression and anxiety daily, this got to the point where I desperately wanted to figure out something I could do that gave me joy. Throughout this time, I’d go to the grocery store and buy a bunch of flowers to come home and make an arrangement. Seeing flowers in my home brought me a sense of peace and comfort. I would post my work on Instagram and get a ton of reactions from my followers letting me know how beautiful my arrangements were. With that came more confidence and excitement to get better at this craft. In time, I realized that this was my calling and that floristry was something I wanted to do.
I then decided that I was going to start and name my business “The Brown Florist”. I knew that I wanted to bring joy through florals to other people’s lives. I now have a plethora of services ranging from floral arrangements, centerpieces for events, house decor, wreaths, etc. I am so pleased with where my business is headed and am so thankful to everyone who has supported me so far.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting your own business from scratch is definitely not easy whatsoever. Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced came from having to figure out the answers to things I simply had no idea how to do. This could range from task like making my own website, building clientele, and creating my customers’ vision all while executing and delivering just what they want. I know that my business is just beginning to get off the ground, but I often have to remind myself to stay patient through this process. There have been times where I am extremely tired from my teaching career, but have orders I need to fulfill. There are also times where I am wishing I had a ton of orders to do, but may only have a couple, sometimes none. I think it’s always important for people who are just starting their business to remember to trust the process. With persistence and hard work, you can do anything!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a florist who designs vibrant creations. I do this by making others’ lives easier, creating unique arrangements for special occasions. I specialize in floral arrangements, whether it be for a loved one, a certain event, a special time or just for decor. I also use florals to create other services like house decor, event centerpieces/decor, bouquets, boutonnieres/corsages, or any idea my customer comes up with that they need me to create. I am known for creating unique and vibrant arrangements that are different from anything you’ve seen before. I have an eye for detail and love to experiment with all different types of flowers. I am most proud of the fact that “The Brown Florist” started as something that was an escape from a dark time I was facing in my life and has turned into something that I can call my own. I absolutely love what I do and love to see the joy it brings to others.
My arrangements are unique and unlike anything you will see in a grocery store or for sale at a shop. Each order is fulfilled with love and extreme time/effort. I focus on making my customer happy all while adding my exotic twist to each arrangement.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
I use my bible app daily which helps keep me level-headed, and focused. This app is amazing to me because you can search any topic that you may be going through in life, and there’s a daily devotional plan created just for you. I also have a favorite book called “The Tools” and this book has a purpose of helping you find courage, creativity, and willpower throughout life. If you are in need of something to inspire you to move forward, I 100% recommend reading this book.
Lastly, I am a HUGE fan of YouTube! This app has helped me discover and figure out so much, whether I need to learn how to do something, or am looking up an idea, YouTube delivers every time. I follow a special family through YouTube, named the Edwards family. I’ve followed their channel from the ground up and have watched how they’ve followed their dreams and accomplished so much all while keeping God at the center. They are definitely a part of the reason I have chosen to follow my dreams and have faith in myself.
