Conversations with Michelin Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelin Smith.

Hi Michelin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, my name is Michelin Smith. I am an advocate for the evolution of college students, in 2008, I was 17 years old when I moved to Dallas, TX, to embark on a whole new journey after high school. I would say I was a sheltered kid, as a matter of fact, my real-world experience only went as far as my mom and dad would allow it to go. Shout out to England & Keo, Arkansas, for raising me, and all the people who took part in the little bit of fun I could have. Forever I love E-town!

I went through a series of unfortunate events. But, all and all, those are the memories that kept me grounded and focused on my goals. Once my niece, Nia, started to embark on her college journey, it hit me that I didn’t want her to go through the same challenges I faced. Then I thought, how many other young adults could benefit from a one-stop-shop of resources. I want to help mold and shape the next generation to be bold, fierce, and strong leaders. But first, we have to start with teaching them how to be financially stable, understanding their career path, and ultimately surviving life. And this is what Dear Life aims to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Dear Life University hasn’t always been a smooth transition. Moving to Dallas wasn’t an easy walk in the park. In fact, I had to go through “Dear Life” to be relatable to the up-and-coming generation. I had to master the art of being in a different state without my core family and friends. Ultimately, I had to figure out LIFE. I had to learn how to survive. Survival mode helped mold me into a woman who will walk through life without depending on anyone. I had to figure it out. I put myself through school, paid for my room and board, all while trying to be a young adult in college. I took a lot of wrong turns in life; I’ve literally been through it all. Those are all reasons why my organization is something that I truly stand for and by, I wish I had a me growing up. I wish I had a one-stop-shop of life tools that would help prepare me for what’s to come.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Dear Life University is an organization whose mission is to create a safe space for young adults growing and experiencing life transitions. Our vision is to nurture and empower young adults to embrace their God-given talents, giving them guidance and life assistance necessary to make their dreams a reality.

What we aim to do is introduce our 12-month programs to our young adults. Teaching them tools such as debit, credit, student loans, career camp, financial literacy, mental health, and more.

I am most proud to be able to be a resource for our younger generations. That is my purpose and what fulfills me.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I genuinely have to give credit to GOD first, and my family and friends. I know my parents are incredibly proud to see the woman I’ve become. I wasn’t always who I am today. I am so thankful to have two parents who are indeed my best friends. The support from them is limitless! My Dad is my advice giver, sometimes unsolicited, but all of the real-life stories he shared with me as a little girl helped mold me. He helped groom me to be wise, educated, and TOUGH! Heavy on the tough! My mom is my hero, she tackled so much in her life, and I am so thankful God saw fit for me to be her daughter. My mom taught me how to be strong and resilient. I get my strength from her. Thank you to all my friends and mentors for pushing me to pursue my passion! To my friends, and it’s too many to name but thank you for showing up as brothers, sisters, mentors, cheerleaders, advocates, and supporters.
