Conversations with Monique Gentles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Gentles.

Hi Monique, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My journey started back in 2008; my first hotel job was at the Marriott Ocean Pointe, a Vacation Club located on Singer Island in South Florida. I loved the ability to interact and create timeless memories for all guests. At this point, I discovered my niche in hospitality, I knew it was time to kick it up a notch, so I moved to Miami. I had an amazing opportunity to work at prestigious properties such as The Setai Hotel (where I completed my managerial training & received Forbes Guest Experience recognition), Fisher Island Club & Resorts and The Hyatt Regency. Shortly after, The EAU (formerly known as the Ritz Carlton.)

I must pay homage to my mother & local Church. Whether you were passing by or staying a while, the warm Jamaican hospitality she has shown everyone is something that cannot be taught but felt from the heart. My home Church (Hi Central) allowed me to actively work in several leadership auxiliaries both on-site & in the community. I am so grateful because it has sharpened the tools I am fully equipped with today.

Although I’ve gained experience & acquired Certifications in Project Management, Hospitality & Tourism, and Event Management, this is where my love for Event Planning/Coordination began to grow.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“You will never experience personal growth, if you fear taking chances.” T.A. Sorensen

Smooth ride…HA…ABSOLUTELY NOT! I moved to Texas a little over a year ago; no friends and no family to rely on here. Relocating to a new city/state alone was both exciting and terrifying. It was just God, me and a vision; yet, I knew deep down there was something bigger in store for me. The loss of both Grandparents this year, 5 months apart, rocked my world and shifted my perspective on life simultaneously. This journey was difficult, yet I prevailed. The naysayers didn’t believe in me, but here I am, still standing. My small supportive circle keeps me going; I don’t know where I’d be without them.

In this season of redemption, I discovered I have a knack for content creation. A few of my favorite creators, such as Shay Regis (IG:shaynicole.xo) and Crista S. (IG: Bahamianista) not only educate but entertain their audience with class. I truly appreciate Crista for her one-on-one zoom consultations, patience and sound advice. She has given me actionable tips that I can utilize to start my journey.

Despite Dallas’ crazy weather patterns, I was able to enjoy all four seasons. But something about not seeing palm trees doesn’t sit right with my soul (haha.) What can I say, I’m a tropical woman.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Hospitality Extraordinaire and very passionate about helping others. Funny enough, in the middle of the covid outbreak, this crazy idea was born. I took a leap of faith and branded myself as Ellustrious Events, an Event & Wedding Planner/Coordinator. Dallas is booming in this industry; I’ve worked with amazing companies such as Walters Wedding Estates and Dallas Country Club. Also, fortunate to work alongside celebrity chefs, published & award nominated Planners & Designers as well as countless aesthetically pleasing wedding/event venues throughout the Dallas Fort Worth area.

Day of coordination is by far my favorite part; seeing all the details come to life is fascinating. My former Brides left great reviews on Wedding Wire. To my future clients, I am there with you every step of the way, and sometimes in the way (haha), I am guaranteed to photobomb a few portraits. Coming from a hotel standpoint, I provide a one-of-a-kind, first-class service & have a particular eye for even the smallest detail.

Networking is my strong suit; I appreciate all of the healthy business connections I’ve made so far. I truly appreciate entrepreneurs, such as Eliza Diop (IG:ellietalksmoney) and Brian Waldron (IG:brianmnkn.) Their courses and masterclass will compel you to level up.

I am most proud of ME for overcoming fear. Many wish they had the opportunity, so I do not take it for granted.

What are your plans for the future?
Before I can plan for the year ahead, I am reviewing the year I’ve just had. No doubt there were victories, mistakes, experiences that grew my skills, and those that didn’t. Life decisions that have catapulted me ahead and decisions that held me back.
I love ALL events, but I am looking forward to new Corporate Events/Briefings and more cultural Weddings (African, Indian, Mexican etc.)

“Write the vision and make it plain”, strategically creating a sound plan for the year ahead.

I am beyond so proud of you of you Mo. You have come so far and been through a lotto get here. I know a lot of those back stories but no need to get into all that. I love the humility of you mentioning your hometown and church. Many would would find that unnecessary and rather embarrassing when talking their faith. You’ve had hospitality in your blood long before you knew it girl. I do not have enough words to describe how happy I am for you. I love you and it’s up from here you. Congratulations!!!!!
