Conversations with Nibal Malshi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nibal Malshi.

Hi Nibal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Nibal Malshi, I’m a Middle Eastern artist, singer & songwriter, born in the city of Haifa & raised in Isfya Village, located on Mount Carmel in Palestine.

Started singing since the age of 5 and devoted my life to the love of music, inspired by many Arab and Mediterranean artists, while performing both at homeland and touring in Europe at some of the most prestigious theaters in the world among those was the Institute de monte Arab in Paris.

My passion didn’t stop there; I always saw myself behind the camera; this passion became reality, and got to perform in musicals and plays written by noble signature poets such as “Samih’ Al-Qasem,” “Shakeeb Jahshan,” “Jubran Khalil Jubran” and many others, in addition to theater played a role in a documentary movie directed by Sahira Dirbas named ” Jerusalem bride” and it has screen worldwide and participated in many international awards.

Besides from singing and acting worked as a dance teacher and a choreographer.

The dream didn’t stop with simply being gifted with my talent, education was very important to me, as I have always wanted to pass this beauty of art to others but wanted to do it the right way, so I have attended and graduated from the academy of music and dance in Jerusalem, was the first vocalist ever to major in middle eastern major singing, and also majored in dance earning 2 bachelors within 6 years.

As of Recognition to artists, received the “Al-Qattan” foundation scholarship for performing arts and was chosen to participate among other artists in a dance workshop partnered with KVS from Brussels for a month-long in Ramallah, a Voice for Peace projects in Germany and musicians’ programs in London and many others.

Since in the states been performing with Master musicians and artists such as Simone Shaheen, and some of my most recent participations has been with the National Arab Orchestra Directed by Maestro Michael Ibrahim, in Detroit, performing in Detroit, San Antonio, Houston, and participated in the AANM Grand Gala event October 2o21 and at the  Arab America Foundation Summit November 2022 in Washington DC.

NEW YORK debut was in November 2021 at the Roulette theater in Brooklyn, in association with the Robert Browning Associate and the Brooklyn Maqam, and honored to be back again for a second concert in March 2023.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m thankful to my career path so far, I always believe that the hardest work I can do, is simply to work hard on myself, as competition may be out there but that’s good as I also believe we are all unique as artists in our own way, luckily I had a great journey so far, working with some international artists, being involved in events that matter some with great humanitarian value and messages.

If any struggle whatsoever, would probably be the commitment and responsibility to always do my best and always grow and do better, but I see that as a key factor to continuous growth and never as a struggle but a process.

I am one of those who feel lucky that I didn’t ever need to compete, been blessed with great support of my family friends and music lovers and fans, people who believed in me and saw something worthy, media sources, journalists, etc.’ and I can’t wait for more to come

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Born in the Middle East, I grew up listening to classics and many well-known artists left a huge impact on me and my life; I grew up performing those beautiful songs that represent my culture, heritage, the beauty of the Middle East, traditions, and more, singing wasn’t the only thing I was attracted to that was part of me but as an artist, I saw beauty in everything, I did ballet for many years and graduated majoring modern dance, it was something that freed the mind and soul, and I saw that within my work with children of special needs and some who were blind, the joy in their movement the smile on their face was pure happiness and freedom, being able to choreograph movement for plays and working with other artist is always a joy.

Acting is also something I enjoy, being able to play many different roles and character, all so different all very interesting, I had the pleasure participating in many great plays and a movie, working with other professional actors and actresses that were always an idol to me had a great growth impact on my career.

Today I perform all over the United States, I work on my own music, and I have 6 singles, some that I personally wrote and composed, and some done by well known musicians and poets in the Arab world.

I am proud to never give up no matter how challenging some days can be, It is  important for me to be selective in my work and that had made me very different from others because to me art and music come from the heart, its pure, my mission is to continue doing what I love, reach every heart possible, deliver a great message through my music and beliefs, never not connected with our emotions, the pain the happiness the strength and above all to be the voice of those silenced and fight for what matters on this earth.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
12 years ago I got married, meanwhile, I was probably reaching a huge step stone in my career, performing, traveling, working a full schedule, touring Europe, endless interviews, tv shows, magazines, archiving Artist of the year, winning first place competitions and more, everything was going so well for me in my life, and then I decided to take a little break to raise my 3 beautiful children, it was one of the best courageous things I have done in my life, for once I didn’t choose myself to be first, but I believed in something bigger, I believed that this is a chapter were I need to make a little change, a little bit of a re-route because bringing a child to this life is not easy and they need our full attention, to me this was a risk, but I didn’t think much about what I may be somehow losing I knew I’m doing the right thing for my kids, being there for them in every step and watch them grow and become who they are has been one of the biggest accomplishments.

2 years ago I started singing again, I won’t lie, it was very hard at the very beginning because here I am, in a new country, were the majority of the language spoken isn’t my mother tongue, but this comeback wasn’t a start from nothing, It was a starting over period with lots and lots of experience, and when you believe in yourself and you believe that this is your role to play in this life journey and this is a part of you that you will never lose because you are born with it, that enough gave me so much strength to continue and all I needed to do is simply what I have always done, believe in myself, work on improving myself at least to the point where I took a little break and thankfully this has been one of the best things I have done the past two years and I’m thankful for the experience so far, I am stronger and much more focused, being good at what you do never puts you at risk yet never to be taken for granted there is huge responsibility in maintaining a standard, but if anything empowers you to continue, but most of all staying humble while achieving every bit of goal goes a long way, today my kids are so proud of me because I set an example to them in many different ways, above all I kept going it’s been a blessing.
