Daily Inspiration: Meet David Porter III

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Porter III.

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For all my life, I have always been a student-athlete. I started running track at the earliest possible age, I picked up basketball shortly after, then picked up football going into middle school. Over the many years throughout school, I invested so much time, energy, money, and focus, into sports, that I did not spend a lot of time with myself. I knew what I liked and what I wanted to do but never took any time doing those things because I had dreams of making it to the NFL, which I knew took a lot of sacrificing. I “dropped out” my last semester in college so I could have “tunnel vision” while training for the NFL. It all payed off, and I was blessed enough to get that opportunity to play in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately, my NFL career was cut short due to injury, so I had to go back to school (TCU) and graduate.

For the first time in over ten years, I was no longer a student-athlete, just a student; and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, just a role I’ve never had. March 24th, 2016, the day that started it all. I found myself at TCU football stadium with my Nikon D60 Gold Edition. Not really knowing what I was doing, I began snapping pictures of the same stadium I would hear thousands of fans cheering in on Saturday’s. From that day forward, I would go out and just begin taken pictures of things outside. I begin to get a different view of life, and more specifically, nature. Growing up, I would always play with my mom’s camera and begin to find myself doing small edits on videos. Fast-forward to now, and I’ve been blessed to own and operate my own production company for the last three years (formed my LLC in 2018). I been fortunate enough to travel all across the country and shoot some pretty cool things with some pretty cool people. It took that same “tunnel vision” I put towards to sports career to get to where I am today and where I plan to take my business in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth ride, but definitely worth it. Starting anything on your own is never easy. Throughout the years it has been awesome meeting other artist and building my team with other good, smart, hard-working people. I’ve made some good friends and business partners over the years. One of the biggest personal challenges I’ve had to face is, knowing my worth. Knowing how important my work and time is and knowing I deserve a certain level of compensation or even respect for that matter.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Tunnel Vision Productions, LLC is a production company helping capture all your video and picture needs. I started my business of working strictly with photos. Over the years, obtaining more knowledge, I’ve been able to transition to work on video, which is now my primary focus. I still do take pictures, but more often than not, my services are needed for videos.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m a believer that you create your own luck from how you treat people and go about your day-to-day life. Treating people right and doing things with pure, good intentions will always come back to you in the future. A lot of first clients were people who I’ve already had some sort of relationship with and because I’ve been respectful and treated them well over the years, it was not an issue getting to do business with them.
