Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Brown.
Hi Erin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My best friend and I were always doing more high fashion and art-focused hair, makeup, and wardrobe growing up, so when she decided to become a wardrobe stylist in LA I decided to leave college and go to cosmetology school. While I was in cosmetology school in Dallas, I started working on music video and commercial sets. I just continued to keep my head down, work hard, and make as many connections as possible. My drive and love for all things art and fashion pushed me to get where I am today, which is a full-time freelance hair and makeup artist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think freelancing/working for yourself is always somewhat of a struggle; you have to have a hustle mentality. And. you have to really love what you do! Getting your foot in the door and making a name for yourself in this industry can be hard. Social media does not make it any easier when it is so easy to compare yourself to artists that have millions of followers knowing your skill is the same! Comparison is the thief of joy, but it is hard to not sucked into that. I was a single mom when starting out in my career and was not able to say yes to as many jobs or opportunities that I wanted to. That was hard. Set days can be 12-14 hours- and weird hours at that. When you are a single parent without the means for childcare it becomes overwhelming, but my ambition has always been strong enough to figure that stuff out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional hair and makeup artist who started out in Dallas, Tx, and now resides in Austin, TX. I started out in fashion- doing mostly editorial, print, commercial, and film. I enjoy doing it all, though. Now, living in Austin, you can find me getting brides ready for their day, too! I do everything from production work to weddings. I love making people feel beautiful in their skin. Serving people is something I will always do, and I am happy to do it in this way, in my career. I would say I am known for the more edgy and editorial looks, but also very soft and natural hair and makeup. I really enjoy accentuating people’s natural beauty, accentuating what they already have going on. The ways I might be different from other artists would be how I connect and interact with my clients. I really like to create a connection and a safeness for people to trust me with their hair and makeup!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I didn’t know that makeup existed outside of Walmart until I started doing makeup professionally!!!
