Daily Inspiration: Meet Gena Tinsley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gena Tinsley.

Hi Gena, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m from a small city in California named Gilroy where I was always surrounded by a melting pot of different cultures but I always stood out for my braiding abilities. I worked at my uncle’s hair salon as the only braider in town and that’s how I was introduced the hair industry. I learned how to care for different textures of hair and how different cultures have different regimens and ways they take care of their hair.
When I back moved to Dallas I became immersed in the hair culture and I later went on to cosmetology school but even then, I always felt like there was a connection missing between the products and the people using them. Last year when my grandmother passed her business to me, I decided to retire from servicing customers through styling to creating products that were meant for every texture of hair, and SilentWatersBeautyCo was born. It started with me wanting to repair the damage from coloring and using heat in my hair over the years. I started researching all of the herbs that help with hair growth and etc to kick start my own Hair Growth Journey. I threw away all of the products I had purchased at my local beauty supply and trusted my own products to do the job which has led me to create my own shampoo and conditioner collections, hair growth oil recipes, and more. I’ve been using my experience and knowledge from working in the field to create various recipes collections that are beneficial and restorative for skin and hair. I’ve made it my mission to create a space for healing and self-empowerment at the source through my brand.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I said everything has been easy, I’d be lying. I feel that’s just one of those things that come with entrepreneurship, it’s all a part of the learning process. The way I handle every obstacle is going within and choosing what I feel is right at that moment. I stay calm in moments that seem hectic and find the positive in the situation. It’s all about your perspective. If you keep things positive, it won’t seem as bad.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
On top of operating SilentWatersBeautyCo full-time, I am also a mother of 3 beautiful children, a model, and singer. I travel around the metroplex attending events with local artists and entrepreneurs showcasing their products and talents. What I’m most proud of and what I feel sets me apart from others is my uniqueness I’m bringing with my brand. SilentWatersBeautyCo is making a powerful impact in the community by providing access to products that actually heal and is beneficial with every use. I am learning to balance being a full time entrepreneur, mother, and every other hat that I wear with my business. I want to show other people like me it’s okay to step out on faith and follow your purpose when it calls you. When I get reviews from my customers I know it’s all working successfully. I have been receiving requests on recipes from people in hopes that I could help them solve their problems in my own way. That’s really what keeps me inspired to keep developing everything I’m doing because I’m really helping those who really need it.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m in the beauty industry and beauty standards change every day. If we tried to keep up with it all, we’d lose our minds. I feel like it’s time to embrace authenticity at its core and that starts with how you feel about yourself. There’s no telling what the future holds for my industry but I know I am the next Icon of my time. I feel like I’m paving the way for new standards of embracing oneself and I know beauty comes in all shapes, shades of color, and genders. SilentWatersBeautyCo is inclusive to all the beauty the world has to give with confidence. I’m bringing the magic and wellness into the beauty industry and creating a lane for authentic self-expression with my beauty company.
