Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Boyle.
Hi Jill, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Several years ago, we had purchased some property with a rundown old barn on it. As we restored the old barn, we had several people ask if they could rent it for their upcoming wedding. The barn had no bathrooms, no parking, and a dirt floor – so we graciously declined but the seed had been planted.
We love building + design, we’re dreamers at heart, and we genuinely love people and their stories. After leaving our daily jobs in ministry we ventured out to find the perfect 20 acres to build our dream on.
Now almost 2.5 years in, the dream continues to grow, the business continues to flourish, and each day we are reminded of the grace and faithfulness of God because none of this would have been possible without Him.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nope (smiling at this question).
But is anything easy that is worth something?
We’ve been asked, “Are you trust fund kids?” or “I bet you have a big investor?”
Again, no.
Opening 5 months before a global pandemic hasn’t been the easiest, but it has also made us the owners and business we are today. Davis & Grey Farms is family-owned and operated; we don’t have the option to fail. We have learned to shift, adapt, and serve better than before. We have made investments into our outdoor entertaining spaces. We have listened and improved. More than anything, we’ve relied on God for wisdom, direction, and provision.
There are days when the manual labor, emails and texts, and meetings seem endless – but then we make it to every ball game for our kids, we eat dinner together almost every night of the week, and we get to work together every day as a family. On the business side we get to see love grow, families come together, and the most amazing memories be made at our venue.
ALL of those things make every hardship worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Davis & Grey Farms is a wedding and event venue just outside of McKinney, TX. It sets on 20 acres of wide-open prairie. It is white, modern, and timeless.
The thing that we are most proud of – we built this.
The new Groom’s Suite, we built ourselves. The courtyard – we did that too. Daybed swings and flower boxes were all built and designed by us together. We’ve laid almost 30,000 sq. feet of sod together! We feel like we have literally dreamed it – then real lifed it!
The thing that sets us apart from other venues – our background in ministry. We have learned to listen and serve people well. Bear always has the guys in mind and making sure the day is just as much about them. I love working with our couples, their families, and so many amazing vendors.
The aesthetic aspect of our venue that sets us apart is our outdoor entertaining options. We have 2000 sq. feet of covered patio with large day bed swings, a 2000 sq. foot turf courtyard that is perfect for yard games and cocktail hour, string lights for the perfect evening atmosphere, and even a putting green and basketball court for the guys.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I, myself, have always been an “afraid to fail” person. I want to know the outcomes, probabilities, and all the details before making a decision.
Bear, my husband, has always been a dreamer. “We’ll figure it out and make whatever it is work,” type of attitude.
Creating Davis and Grey Farms has definitely been the biggest risk we have ever taken together. We sold out everything we had and went for broke! We didn’t have the option for it not to work, and I think that was the changing point for me.
You figure out every way to make it work and succeed, and once you take the first risks – the rest never seem as big.
I don’t worry and overanalyze like I did before. It’s almost as you know you can do “it”, you feel like you can do anything.
You become less and less afraid to fail.
