Daily Inspiration: Meet Joela Tate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joela Tate.

Hi Joela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As long as I can remember I’ve always had the desire to become a registered nurse. After graduating from Peabody Magnet High School of Alexandria, LA I went on to Southern University A&M of Baton Rouge, LA to pursue a career in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following my first semester, I returned home for the summer and acquired a certification in nursing assistance. Over the next few years, while attending college, I worked as a nurse assistant and aided in the care of my mother. It was rough juggling the load. I pushed through as much as I could before finding myself lost and unfocused on the task at hand. After a few years of college, I meet my husband and life took another turn. I was completely unfocused on academics but heavily in love. Much to my surprise I learned, I was pregnant and life itself began to unfold before my eyes. I became a mother and at that moment I realized that was the most important thing in my life. Years later I found myself being a proud mother of 3 handsome boys and a dedicated wife. In 2013 my family and I moved to Desoto Tx and settled in a very nice and quiet neighborhood. Over the years I toggled between customer service and medical jobs and even acquired a certification in phlebotomy still desiring the need to become a registered nurse so I later attended LPN school. It was during this time I realized being a mother, wife, and student and still trying to find time to figure out my career path was still just a bit much to handle. I introduced myself to making sweet desserts around the house a habit. I began making pecan candy and sending it to school for gifts to my boy’s teachers. They were so impressed with its presentation and the taste was even more satisfying. They started asking did I have the candy for sale so of course, I jumped on the opportunity. All the while never expecting I had walked right into what has now become one of the best decisions I could have ever made. Over the years at the request of the community, I started teaching myself how to make delicious sweet treats including chocolate-covered strawberries, cake pops, and pretty much anything that could be dipped or covered in chocolate. I struggled with keeping a 9-5 because my heart was at home. Being available to my family was at its highest priority. I often found myself back in the kitchen creating or designing party treats which then led to me trying my hand in cake designing. I came up with the name Mommy’s Touch by Joela about 6yrs ago to which what started as a side hobby and now becoming my very own small business. I must say I never anticipated the thought of being a business owner however at the expense of managing my own schedule, being available to my kids and husband, and making money all at the same time was well worth it. I’m ECSTATIC at the thought that I have possessed the necessary skills and knowledge to not only start my own business but grow with my business. I’ve also started a second business, Jewels of Jo’Elz Event & Design with hopes to serve on a larger scale to meet the needs of my community. I’m thankful to God for my awakening to what he had planned for me versus what I thought my plans were for my life. I’m extremely honored and gratefully thankful for the woman I have grown to become. My dream is to be all that has been assigned for me and with the help and support of the community, I will exceed above and beyond my own expectations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not been easy. Life has its way of molding you for the better or worse. I struggled with being a mother, wife, and nursing student and adding financial stability to our family

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a self-taught treat and cake designer. I create custom-designed desserts to tailor any occasion. I also offer party services including balloon decor and event designing. My passion and desire to relieve people of the added stressors of daily life including aiding in making some of their most memorable occasions that much more special at the hands of a mother’s sweet touch. I’m proud to be such a huge inspiration to so many as they have also followed me on my journey of growth. my desire to serve and give to the community is no longer just a creative hobby but a constant duty to place a smile on others’ face

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Being a business owner can be stressful and overwhelming. I’ve learned no matter how tough the obstacles, only faith, persistence, and consistency will get you to the finish line
