Daily Inspiration: Meet John Wayne Colwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Wayne Colwell.

John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello Dallas Voyager, Thank you for having me. My name is John Wayne, and yes that is my real name. I am named after my Dad whose parents were huge fans of the Legendary Actor. Like John Wayne, I was born to be an entertainer and influencer for people. I carry that same swagger. I just traded the horse in for a dj booth, and my saloons are night clubs. I discovered electronic music culture when I was 17 and have had the ride of my life.By the time I was 21, I was DJing and throwing my own shows. I am 36 now and I have never stopped.

I haven’t quite got to where I want to be yet, but I am building something amazing with people I love. I am truly in pursuit of happiness and re-writing a past that no longer defines me. I am proud of where I came from and blessed to have experienced the life I’ve had to live. I hope my story will inspire people that come from nothing, and show them that they can build something great anyways! I have learned from my mistakes and turned my life around. I got held captive by the Darkside of club life and made my way to the OtherSide. I was able to turn my passion into a lifestyle and live one amazing adventure that took me way out west and found a Love that Led me back Home after being away for a decade.I had to face my past, be brave, and face my fear, return home to set the record straight and bury the past behind me and embrace my future with my New Queen and Son, and build a new Kingdom. I am back and I am only getting started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. But saddle up anyways because I’m here to tell you all about it.

My story starts in Galesburg, Il , where I am originally from. I’m the oldest of 5.I moved to Waco Texas with My mom and siblings after my parents split up, and I guess you could say I had to grow up really fast.

When I was 17 I was introduced to the Rave culture through my best friend Steveo. We went to Dallas for the first time and went to our very first Rave called Zenfest at the American Airlines Center. That blew my mind. I saw this group called Rabbit in the Moon performing a show called OBE Out of Body Experience. This show is what I

Consider the day I went down the rabbit hole. Everything about it captivated me, the lights, sound, visuals, performers, I have never seen anything like it in my life, and I was

hooked. To top it off at the very end of the show Bunny, the main performer, also the creative director for EDC, threw 2 flags into the audience. I caught one and my boy Steveo caught the other one out of thousands of people.

After the party we went to the Afterparty to the Lizard Lounge, where Paul Oakenfold was headlining. This was my first time at a club. The stage was outside under the I35 bridge Dallas skyline as the backdrop and It was packed with ravers just like us. After this we went to the After After party, a warehouse everyone knows called Afterlife and,

After that I was sold, I needed to get out of WACO and move to Dallas.

I wanted to be a professional Raver, and dance, maybe become a dj. I was not sure what exactly, but I needed to be involved. I went back to Waco and dropped out of High school, I told my parents who had gotten back together by now, that I was out to figure my life out and I was going to be famous one day.

I moved here and went to the clubs every weekend. I became pretty known for my dancing. I had a dance crew, and we lived for the weekends. During the week I was not doing much living with friends, working odd jobs, surviving. Most of my friends were drug dealers and I watched a lot of people go to jail. I followed as many leads as I could to make my dream come true, but it always led to nothing. When I turned 20 I moved back to waco to get my life on track.

I took some time and decided maybe I needed to do something different, so I actually enlisted into the Navy, but I did not get in due to medical reasons, and decided I was going to go for music again. I went with my friends back to Dallas to watch Tiesto at Club Blue for, In search of sunrise 7. I knew that Tiesto used to throw his headphones out into the audience, and literally told my friends I was going to catch them. Well I did, and after that took that as my sign it was time to become a DJ. and that was how I was going to do it. I used those headphones for 8 years.

After I made the decision to go for it, I got my GED and decided if I’m going to be famous it was not going to be for my dancing only. I needed to make music and become a DJ, so I went to community college and took audio production. I learned the basics, but when I got my student loan I invested into DJ equipment. I had no idea what I was doing or what was Industry standard. I literally bought what I thought looked like spaceships and figured it had to be it. Turns out I was right and bought pioneer cdj 800mk2s. Which is what was being used in the clubs at the time.

After practicing a lot in my room and getting yelled at by roomates for trainwrecking all the time I finally got it, and was able to play sets and not clear the room.I decided waco needed edm and started throwing shows with my friends essentially starting a edm community in a city were the only kind of clubs or bars they had, were playing only country or rap. My friends and I successfully ran edm weekly events for over a year or so.This is where my passion for organizing events came from. After a year or so, I decided to give Dallas another shot but this time as DJ John Wayne.

As soon as I moved here I started DJing at a hookah joint in Greenville called Kismet every monday. Quickly building a fan base. I spent a lot of time pursuing the dream gigs like the Lizard Lounge and Insomnia, Eden, I looked up to guys like Raydar and Shaolin, Titan, Andy Szontagh, Jimmy B all the 12 inch pimps, Willie Trimmer, but I found it really difficult to get booked, so I started my own shows called Club Chance and I gave bedroom djs a chance to play. From there I was getting a reputation and then the bookings started to come.

My first major show was at Plush and my friend and I booked Frankie Bones, and Simply Jeff. Bones is the guy who coined the motto P.L.U.R. Peace Love Unity Respect and one the founding fathers of techno. I played a two hours set opening the night with one hand, because five days before that show I hurt my hand on a table saw and almost lost 3 fingers. Bones said that’s what Legends are made of, I always thought that was pretty cool. As fate would have it my future business partner Willie Trimmer and Owner of the 12 Inch Pimps would be playing that night as a resident dj for the club. From there my partner and I booked DJ Craze 6x dj world champion, and I opened that night. I djd in Dallas for 5 years every weekend, new gigs, weekly residencies then after parties.

When I was 25 I was asked to manage a club everyone knows as Darkside, we are responsible for adding the second R to the Ravers Motto for Responsibility and P.L.U.R.Responsibility was born.

I was responsible for everything. I Curated themed events, booking 30 djs a week, djing, promoting, and paying everyone. It was my full time job. We built a massive following, sometimes reaching 1000 dancers a night. I got to give djs with no experience opportunities to learn to play and build a following. I met so many lifelong friends an. Unfortunately in 2011 we were shut down because the city said we could not DANCE.

A Lot of people know my past with Darkside, and how much it affected me, what it cost me. I had reached a plateau for me in Dallas and decided I wanted to leave and start over fresh somewhere else, to go and become the entertainer I was meant to be. I felt

like my decade in Dallas was done and due for a new start. My goal here is to finally tell the other story about what happened when I left, where I went, and where I am now.

My uncle asked me to come out to Las Vegas and help him build a new community, this time in the paranormal field. He had an idea to start a new group called 4 Real Encounters intl. The concept was exciting and he witnessed my success with Darkside. He needed me to manage his social media and grow 4 Real. I said let’s do it and bought a one way ticket. I landed in Vegas and it was like I moved to another world.

When I was 25 I moved to Las Vegas, young and full of hustle. I will never forget the feeling I felt taking off from Dallas to Vegas. I had never been on a plane before so this was the first of many kinds of new experiences. I was leaving everything behind, lifting up off the ground and flying into my new life.It was also New years and I took off at midnight, but Vegas is a two hour time difference, so I landed in Vegas at midnight to the site of the city exploding in fireworks. That was absolutely insane. I did not know anyone besides my uncle Jerry Dean who was out there living in a small apt with his pregnant girlfriend. I had no idea what I was gettin into, but I decided it was time to go and pursue this dream.

When I arrived my phone was dead and had no charger. I had no idea where I was going. So I just hopped on a bus and went towards the strip. I knew the street I needed to get off at. I did not know what building, unit, or direction to go. I hopped off the bus and was looking down Flamingo and looking at the strip like 10 miles straight ahead. I just started walking. Now mind you I have not seen my Uncle Jerry Dean in over 5 years. I got not even one block down the street and My uncle was walking to the store to get a pack of smokes and we met right there not knowing where I was going. It was truly bizarre.

I had been messaging djs in vegas networking trying to meet new people so I had some connections when I moved there. I was talking to Jeff Vegas Banger who is the former partner in the famous trap edm group CakedUp, I also Met Dj Michael Toast who is one of the top Vegas djs on the strip. He invited me to a club the first night I was there. I took my uncle and the door guy was not letting us in. I told them I was John Wayne and I am here to see the dj. The door guy left and my uncle is saying John this is not Texas we are not getting in. Just then over the microphone I hear John Wayne report to the DJ Booth. We get escorted past the line through the club and on to the stage. My first night in Vegas I am on stage with th Dj and dancing in front of a massive crowd. It was wild. Michael introduced me to everyone and I got a job that night promoting for all the major clubs on the strip.

4 Real Encounters started as a facebook group where members could openly talk about any paranormal encounters or “4 Real Encounters they have experienced, and we would connect them to Para-professionals, people like ghost investigators, spiritualists, mediums, ufologists, etc to ask them questions and get input and advice about their encounter. This was new and challenging, but I welcomed the opportunity and did really well with it. Turns out the Paranormal industry is massive and together we grew our page to 4k followers in 4 days. This caught the attention of some radio shows and we soon had our very own online show called 4 Real Talk radio. We were broadcasting to a massive world wide audience every week and met some of the most interesting people on the planet. We decided to do a conference called The ‘Awakening” ParaUnity World Conference. We had 14 of the top paranormal experts in the world, fly in and speak. Come the day of the event, the building roof caught on fire right above us in the middle of the conference and we were forced to cancel. But we did it and it was a great experience. The community continues to grow and my uncle still runs it till this day.

My main goal for going to vegas was to learn as much as I could about the entertainment industry and be discovered. I was mind blown when I found out djs like Tiesto were resident djs at these clubs and I could see them on a tuesday. I interviewed for a talent agency and was hired for various gigs. The cost of living in Vegas is cheap, but the lifestyle is not. I started waiting tables at Buca DI Beppo to provide for me, my uncle and his girl. We shared a 1 bedroom apartment at siegel suites a few blocks down from the strip. I was determined to become something out there. In my spare time I took my video camera out on the strip and I would shoot dance videos, and dance for tips, Wearing a sign that said “Tips 4 my Talent”.

I had all kinds of jobs in vegas. I was project manager for a $1 million dollar renovation for a very famous mansion called the Heartland mansion that Elvis, Johnny Cash, all the Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra and many many stars used to stay and party at. I worked in a fabrication warehouse called Cree8 studios and we built all kinds of show props for magic shows, and other cirque style shows. My real passion was djing and I got to play in all kinds of clubs, mansions, penthouses, deserts, pool parties and of course after hours. I discovered the burning man community, and underground culture pretty quickly and left the strip side soon after.I found this side of vegas more in line with my vibe.. It was the time of my life I worked at EDC twice and even was in the 2014 trailer. It was pretty cool because I got to see Bunny again from Rabbit in the Moon. He actually saw me dancing on the strip and invited me to the shoot! Ten years in the rabbit hole and I find the Bunny in Vegas.

I met some Hawaiian brothers, Tosh and Hawaiian Lyon that had a group called SubMilitia and were set to go on a 3 state tour. They hired me to be their tour manager

and invited me to DJ on some of the shows. We had 1 track called “Hustlin” . It was a hybrid mix of Dubstep reggae and hip hop. We called the tour Bass Island 2014 with the last show ending on Oahu Hawaii.

We played in Nevada City, Vegas, LA, and Oahu. I went out there on tour and decided to stay. I lived there for 6 months, DJing and throwing shows all over the island. I had Buca put in a transfer so I had a job as soon as I landed on the island. I Met a lot of cool people and learned how to breathe and find a deeper meaning in life. Island life is a struggle because everything is so expensive, but it was truly beautiful. I loved every bit of it. I moved back to vegas and was there for a bit longer.

One day I decided to go on a trip with some friends to DJ a festival in Arkansas and we got pulled over and never made it out of Arizona. I went to prison for 2 years and it changed my life. When I was down I taught myself discipline. I had time to learn, business, spiritual practices, work out, I had a job, led the praise and worship team, taught celebrate recovery, preached a few sermons in the church, and ran the newspaper. I got out and paroled to mesa arizona. With no help, no family , no friends, just me in a halfway house and the desire to be better.

I went to my first show in phoenix called Dirty Disco and met the Phoenix EDM community, soon after I was getting involved playing shows and learning this new city I had no intention of living in. Amanda who is my Wife now. Use to go to Darkside and one day hit me up on Facebook to see how things have been going with me. We had talked a few times over the years on my journey but, this time we’re starting to fall for eachother. We started a long distance relationship, She lived in Texas and I was in Arizona on parole in a halfway house.

6 months after getting out I saved up money and bought new dj gear. I had to discover what was current music and many things changed a lot, it was crazy, I started practicing and getting in tune with everything again. My buddy who was working for a record label called Noisy Music offered me a job in artist relations. My job was to discover new talent and sign them to the label, manage and schedule releases and organize events. I signed and released over a dozen new producers and some have gone on to play major festivals signed to big labels. I had a lot of fun learning this side of the business. One of the artists on our roster was a Waco local named Ethan Toles. He introduced me to the founders of the Illectric River Music Festival that was being held in my home town of WACO at the Baylor stadium. This is now called Illfest and is a major festival in Austin. I worked with their team to come up with a second stage for locals, being a local I felt like it was important to show them love. I suggested that we do a dj battle and the winner plays the fest. They did the battle and produced an entire new stage called the Texas

Bangers Stage. I was invited to play and flew back home to rep my city many years later at the biggest edm event waco has ever had. It was an honor, and it was also the first festival Amanda has ever been to.

I moved Amanda to Phoenix after I completed Parole. We decided it was time to start a life together. We started running a club together and throwing shows. She really wanted to DJ, so on her birthday I taught her how to mix. We got engaged at a Valentine’s festival called Crush and I popped the question in front of the entire AZ RAVE FAM during the big Family picture. It was epic.

We came up with our name Team Umami, Umami meaning savory and delicious after we entered into a cheba hut cheeba run contest, where we were going to travel to all the cheba huts in america and film it, but we got pregnant with our son Atlas and dropped out of the contest, and kept the name for our new dj duo. We played a few shows in Phoenix, but decided we were going to move back to Texas to be close to family and raise our son at home.

At this point I have now been gone for a decade and only came into play random shows a few times. I was scared to death to move back, because of all the past, and knew I was going to have to face it when I moved back. But this time it was different because now I have a son to raise. New motivation , and new girl, and I was back. Team Umami came to Texas hot, I used my connections to get us tons of bookings and we were pushing our brand on every show I could. I got us booked all over Texas. SXSW showcases, BakedUp events, in Austin, Houston, San Antonio etc.

One Day Amanda tells me there is a venue in Arlington where we live that is looking for an event coordinator. I have not started djing in Dallas again yet or throwing shows, only Team Umami bookings. So I go check it out. It was a massive 14ksft warehouse painted in neon black light paint with murals of space and astronauts. The owners called it G1 studios. They wanted a christian edm venue. So I created CRAVES and produced a few Crave and Worship events. But I also threw underground clean parties where there were no drugs, alcohol and I even required the djs to play clean music. To my surprise it was a vibe and people respected it. I booked a few of my Vegas dj friends to fly out and play and came up with a new company called OTW entertainment Out of this World. This lasted about 6 months before the owners sold the place.

At this time there was a small crew building up in fort worth at this club called the Red Goose and this would grow into the DFW Rave Fam that we know today. I would go there every Thursday and for about 6 months carried a strong residency and helped to grow the community, I resigned after I had gotten a job offer to work for an event

company on tour traveling out of state all over America setting up events, djing, and coordinating logistics, literally my dream job!

I had my welcome back party on my bday at Green Elephant. We booked Donald Glaude and called it Big Ups. It was absolutely amazing. I figured I would come back and just do me staying true to what I do and that was to create fun shows. The event was a great success. I even had the

In the meanwhile, I’m driving home one day and I see a random pyramid being built in Arlington at globe life, it looked like the Luxor just landed in my backyard and I was curious. I went home and googled Pyramid Arlington and PY1 came up. PY1 was a massive traveling pyramid designed by Guy Laliberte the co-founder for Cirque du Soleil. This thing was really cool, their program was here for a few months during regular hours, they had the PY1 experience which was cirque based family friendly shows, and at night they hosted major house and techno shows with headliners. I met with the head of marketing and was offered a job to lead their local promotions. It was really cool. We wanted to DJ there but they were fully booked. We got to work closely with them for 2 months. For the duration of their tour.

Ahh the wedding. #Teamumamiwedding2020 was one for the books. We totally planned to elope, but when we saw The Quixotic Magical World Theatre, it was a no brainer, we had to have it there. We planned a very eccentric alice and wonderland theme, we had

full decor, performers, and we even djd a set. It was such a great time. Then we went and played a 4 hour underground techno set at a secret Party with all of our friends still in our wedding attire.

After we got back from our honeymoon in Denver, I started that new career traveling for the event company, when the world shut down due to the pandemic. I was in Utah training for 5 days, flew to Phoenix for the first event, got everything almost set up and the fire marshall showed up to shut us down and deliver the news, due to COVID all events are canceled. I stayed in phoenix one night and played one last show before flying home at my buddy’s underground club thinking to myself what is going to happen next. Amanda was a concierge for the grand Hyatt dfw airport, and she was let go. So here we are 2 djs newly wed and in a lockdown. We did what every other dj did and learned to live stream. We started getting booked for alot of really cool live stream shows, BakedUp in Austin and AfterLife Dallas the Kitchen, Last Night A dj Saved My Life, Set For love IBIZA, we had a blast, Then all of a sudden I got invited to a party to this place called SANCTUARY!!!

The whole world was shut down. I have been at home for 6 months with my new wife and I’m getting ready to go to a party for the first time. I had no idea what to expect. I show up in Irving to a massive 20ksqft studio and see all kinds of people dressed real

nice but wearing masks. They had a dj and food, it was a beautiful venue. I was introduced to the owner through some mutual friends and they invited me to a meeting that week. I show up and meet with the owners, and some other partners and other promoters. I was asked to help with promotions and talent booking. I took the job and started putting together a program for them. One week into it everything went back into shut down for a month. I got another call saying we were good to open again because now we are serving food, and the other promoters dropped out for various reasons. Leaving me as the lead program director. My challenge was to properly promote a party that practiced safety protocols and implement protocols into our program. We had hundreds of couches and ample space for social distance, we had a limited dance floor. I treated it as a restaurant, You had a section you could dance in with no mask, it was beautiful. If you were walking around we had signs that said “mask on or you’re gone”. I called the events Protocol. We were legally allowed to be open and cut our capacity down to half which allowed us still to have 4-500 people. It was a very fun project. This is what really put me back in the public eye again and how I connected with Willie. We both played Dan Luna’s Dragons Halloween Ball that year at Sanctuary and from there we started talking about his new venture he had coming up and wanted to talk to me about coming on board.

Sanctuary was shut down due to noise violations, we had neighbors and you do not win against the HOA. They moved it to Lorenzo, and I decided it was time to take a leave of absence and start my own thing. So I formed John Wayne presents. I have always had some entity I produced events under, when I ran darkside I had ShowDown Ent, When I

moved to Vegas it was New Light Ent, When I moved back I started OTW ent, Sanctuary was its own thing but this time I needed to define my shows as who I was and felt like it was time to own it. I was inspired by Disco Donnie and the caliber of events he produces, my goal is to one day be that big, but right now I’m cool rocking local. My wife and I decided it was time to start booking headliners and we had some funds. Basically our savings and invested it into a show called SUBDUCTION we booked it at Vivas lounge which was the very first EDM show to be held there and we booked PIXEL TERROR and MashBit. It was a great show, we had Prickly Pete who now produces shows with Disco Donnie there, run the production points, Daisy’s One World performers, vendors, and about 400 people. We did a few more after that and then took a break.

About this time Willie was ready to launch the Underground at the Aloft hotel. We booked 3 rooms and hosted the best djs in dallas. We had a very Upscale Underground vibe and we were building a really good following.

From here Jack’s House was reborn. @Jackshousedallas We decided to keep the parties going at our buddy’s place, it was downtown, full of art and nothing but house music. Great Vibes. We moved it to another spot for another 6 months until we landed at our new home. Fevermatic. Located in Oak Cliff Fevermatic is a creative photo/video studio and event space with in-house professional photographers, videographers, and fashion designers/ coordinators. The best in the Bizz. @fevermatic! This halloween will marked our 1 year stay here and we have produced a party every weekend this year, non stop.

All of this has been supported by my beautiful wife who is very much involved in every bit of this, while she is busy building her artist career as BAELIEN. She has dropped her first official single called ‘Mellow Brick Road’ ‘ dedicated to the Yellow Brick road tour which led her to Dancefestopia. We just returned back from Kansas and had such a great time, she got to shoot her music video on the main stage and now her track is trending with over 30k plays in a month. The music video is coming soon. I have taken on the role as her manager. Our goal is to Make her a superstar headliner, so far she played Freaky Deaky, Electric Art Festival, and is set to play Backwoods in April.Plus she runs an all female event company/ dj roster called the Venus Collective and is actively producing her own events now.

So you see it does not matter where you come from, I am someone that grew up poor, broken home, got into a lot of trouble, did a ton of drugs, messed my life up, went to prison, am a felon, but I am also a Child of God, I love people, turned my life around found true love, created a family, faced my fear and my past, reinvented myself and am now Proud I can tell you my story without any shame or regret. If I can do it, you can too. Jesus loves you and so do I.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I always had a love for God and Performing,I was raised mainly by my Mom, Memaw and Uncles, who had bible studies every morning and really showed me how to love and help people. This is where my passion for helping people stemmed from. When I was 8 years old I had my first taste of the stage performing, at the Heart of Texas coliseum with my Sunday school class and one of the top christian recording artists at the time; Carmen. We performed 1 song and there were 10,000 people there. This is where the passion for being on a stage in front of a massive audience came from.

In school I pursued theater, and sports. I was in alot of plays, and was a pretty good soccer player. I took school somewhat seriously, until high school. I got into some trouble, and one day when I was 16 I got into a really serious car wreck. I was ejected

out of the windshield and was found 20ft from the car, under a tree. I collapsed my lung and spent time in the ICU. I had the realization that my life was spared for a reason and I’m here for a reason.

I had a tough relationship with my Dad as a kid, but now we are great. I love my Pops and he is really proud of everything I have done. I am at heart a mama’s boy and always will be, she has been there for me though all my ins and outs. I missed growing up with my younger siblings because I was always on the move and i’m really bad about staying in touch so they see my life online, but now I’m home and make it a point to be closer to everyone.I spent a lot of time with my uncles learning a lot of the basic things. I would have late night conversations with my uncle outside in the country talking about God and energy, the life force, all kinds of things. We had fun and went on trips. My mom and dad got back together. I moved out when I was 17 but bounced around alot when I was 14. I love my family. My dad remarried after we all grew up. My Mom takes care of my grandma, and all my family lives in Waco. We all have kids now and all our kids love to get together. It is so crazy watching everyone grow up and how fast things like this happen. My Son just turned 4 and started Pre-k the day after, now he is in school full time. Life is truly trippy, but I love every bit of it.
