Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Cornish.
Hi Julia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was looking for a creative outlet separate from my full-time job in higher education and landed on pouring candles in vintage glassware. Though I am born and raised in Texas, my family is from the Midwest where many of the famous glass companies are or were. Because my love for glass began early in life with my family, this endeavor was a no-brainer!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been wonderful but there of course have been challenges. Pouring candles really is a science so I had to brush up on some math skills and not shy away from research! The biggest challenge though is running a small business while working full-time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of sharing these pieces from a different time with others. Many people I meet remember their families having these pieces or they have never seen anything like what I use as vessels. What sets me apart from other candle makers is that the vessel becomes a treasure long after the candle is gone. I also take great care in researching every piece so that I can tell its story.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience! For both streamlining the process and that success does not happen overnight.
