Daily Inspiration: Meet Kristin Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Roberts.

Kristin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Plano, TX and quickly knew throughout high school I didn’t want to do the typical ‘college’ route like my friends. I chose to pursue Makeup Artistry and went to school to learn all about the basics of makeup at 18 years old. In the early 2000s, MAC Cosmetics was like THE Makeup Brand and I had all the drive to become a Makeup Artist for them. I loved their individuality. I loved their products, I just knew I could create a career in makeup artistry with them. So, I did! I worked for MAC Cosmetics for 11 years!

What started as just a part-time makeup artist, I quickly became a Regional Educator for the Brand traveling the southern states to deliver Trainings on product knowledge, customer service and artistry. I have a HUGE passion for teaching and sharing knowledge with others. I got laid off in 2019 as a result of restructuring with the Brand (or at least that’s what they said). After becoming a new mom, I took a nice six months off of working to just figure out exactly what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to continue to do makeup and help women with their routines. Since I had recently switched to all non-toxic skincare and makeup, I thought a specific service to help others make that switch was much needed. So, when the stay-at-home orders started in March 2020, I decided to start my own business and Artistly Beauty Co was born! It started as quick 30-minute Zoom calls with clients to help go through their makeup bag and see what they needed and what could be edited to fit their lives. Clients were really loving this service, and now it has expanded into monthly subscriptions, Brand partnerships and crafting educational, social content for clean beauty brands as well!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been bumpy as ever!! But I am beyond grateful for all the obstacles. I was laid off from MAC when I was eight months pregnant. After going through an extremely traumatic pregnancy and delivery AND being forced out of an 11-year career, you could say my mental health was extremely broken. Especially becoming a new mom and not having my dream job anymore was extremely debilitating. I spent a solid six months navigating through my post-partum depression/anxiety and trying to figure out what I wanted to do for work. I went back and forth of either going back into a corporate setting, looking for a job in a completely different field, but all I wanted to do was just help women look and feel their best. It took me about a year to really test to see what worked for my business and how I could create a new approach to customized beauty consultations. Also, my previous career was pretty toxic. I was constantly being told how to act, how to speak, what to wear, how to look, that I had a lot of personal growth to do as I started my business. I needed to figure out my true identity in this new phase of life. After hiring a business coach, I started from the ground up and built a solid Clean Beauty Concierge business with a few service offerings not only to individual clients but to clean beauty brands as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
After working in cosmetic retail for 11 years, I’m knowledgeable on what women are looking for in the beauty world and how they want to shop. I also know how overwhelming it can be trying to find the right product that not only works for your skin and coloring but also what fits your lifestyle! I specialize in non-toxic beauty, and after making the switch in my personal beauty routine, I realized there are so many incredible products out there that I wanted to share with women. I also wanted to create a service where clients didn’t feel that intimidation of purchasing a product that actually may not be necessary for them.

In a world where most women get their makeup tips and tricks from Instagram or TikTok, I had to create a service where a true industry professional was at their fingertips to make these unattainable makeup looks more digestible for them. Since my background is in education, I also take the time to really educate my clients so they can understand their skin needs so that one day, they may not need my advice. They will be their own experts! I offer 1:1 consults and lessons to walk you through your clean skin and makeup routine followed by a step-by-step beauty guide. My monthly Beauty Concierge support is AFFORDABLE because I believe that professional advice should be offered to everyone. I’m mostly known for the effortless, glowing makeup looks I create. I have a toddler at home, and life is crazy busy, so I need to be able to create looks that are fresh and youthful-looking without using a lot of products. Clients come to me when they want their skin and makeup to look smooth and flawless but without the heavy, caked-on look. Less is MORE!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I love me some Clubhouse! I try to get in as many rooms as possible so I can hear from other creatives, business owners, etc. I’ll just join a room while I’m cooking dinner and I absorb a lot of inspiration that way. My husband is an Audible nerd, so he always keeps our app up to date and I’ll randomly end up listening to a book about hunting or something-haha! I also can’t help but just follow as many female business owners as possible. Whether they are in my same industry or completely different, I get fired up listening to other women’s stories and what they’re passionate about.
