Today we’d like to introduce you to Rod Walker Jr.
Hi Rod, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was raised in North Carolina by military parents. They made sure to express that my individuality is a strength. My father is a role model in my life as he has shown me hard work, relationships, and family are everything that drive life, happiness, and creativity. I value good friends, traveling, food, and spending time with my wife, Troynisha Walker. She has a great sense of humor and I married my best friend and business partner in 2017 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
I can remember in elementary school. I could draw Dragon Ball Z characters really well. My classmates were impressed and wanted me to teach them how to draw or ask me to make art for their cubicles. At a young age, I began to realize how art can make people happy. I started my business, Chopped & Skru’d Designed, while in college, I just didn’t have a name for it yet. I made music, performed concerts, built a clothing brand, designed flyers and hosted parties on campus. I loved being in a creative space that brought smiles and people together. Chopped & Skru’d Designs is the culmination of my personal expression and purpose path. I use art, technology, and music to connect people and help business owners with their creative needs. I have been hands-on with digital media and technology for 20+ years. I look forward to growing this business to a worldwide base and collaborating on large, life-changing projects. 2021 is the year I perfect my niche/original style. I choose the name Chopped & Skru’d because of my love for music and my ‘outside the box’ perspective.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. As a matter of fact, the road is still under construction. Initially, I was too attached to projects and sometimes hit a creative block. Now I practice keeping an open mind. I have learned to be patient through the process and communicate in a way that ignites my client’s own wave of creativity! I look to find balance in my emotional, mental, and physical being. I work full-time and also run a 2nd business (Tulips Bomb Body Care). This is time-consuming and requires a lot of dedication, planning, and intentional self-management. I embrace the lessons learned from each moment and expect struggles as a part of the process. The journey is far from over.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is catered to the professional looking for a bold, creative, and eye-catching design. I create custom logos, graphics, social media highlights, product labeling, and trade show banners. I enjoy helping people transform an idea into their bold brand identity. I believe that art and technology is just starting to be fully introduced into a new generation of business owners.
I will always have a passion for creating and being a light to those who need it. I’m proud of of creating logos for 2 emerging black-owned businesses in North Carolina and Texas. Bartending & Mixology company “On The Way Bartending” — also Texas trucking company “McKinney Total Logistics”. I am excited to see my work on the highway across an 18-wheeler or social media post during a successful online mixology class doting my logo work on their custom printed aprons. What sets me apart is my attention to creative detail, tech savvy, and logo composition. Whether I’m creating your trade show banner or custom t-shirt graphic, you can feel confident that you will get top tier service and a quality design!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m always blessed. I have come across my share of hard times, depression, family, health, and much more. I never allow these situations to steer my life. I find that when I try my hardest, keep some gratitude, and speak my mind, I almost always succeed, this theory has not let me down. There are times where things do not go as planned, but I try to keep an open mind and look for the bright side to it all. I’ve been told this can be annoying at times (but who doesn’t need a good optimist around).
