Exploring Life & Business with Amanda Whitmill of Salt and Sugar Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Whitmill.

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had entrepreneurial desires but was afraid to pursue them. After obtaining my Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences in 2016, I worked in academic research and as a medical writer but wasn’t fully satisfied with my career choices. In April 2022, I decided to take a chance on myself. I decided to quit my job and shortly after I was accepted into the Impact Ventures Business Accelerator Program.

I initially entered the program to work on a completely different business idea, but in the process, the idea for Salt and Sugar Wellness was born, and I decided to pursue that instead. It’s hard work running a business while being a single mother, but it’s also very fulfilling. I have learned so much and am so proud to say that I created something from nothing but an idea.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth. Creativity comes to me easily, but so much more about business requires strategy, planning, and making difficult decisions. Certain financial aspects of running a business are where I have struggled. I have to ask myself if I’m making the right choices, and importantly, I must have the ability to think long-term.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Salt and Sugar Wellness?
When I created Salt and Sugar Wellness, I wanted to share my favorite tools for relaxation and wellness. Some of the tools I use in my personal life to realign and recalibrate include clearing my space of negative energy, taking a long, luxurious bath, relaxing with the smell of an incense burning, and meditating with crystals.

Salt and Sugar Wellness was created by thoughtfully crafting (yes, I researched every ingredient I chose to include in my products) bath and body products and sourcing other handmade products from other black- and/or women-owned businesses. I sell handmade, all-natural bath bombs, bath salts, and sugar scrubs (my best seller!). I am excited to start offering a whipped body butter, shimmer body oils, chakra balancing oils, and a selection of crystals, sage, and other wellness products.

What do you think about luck?
Luck has played a very important role in my life and business. Many of my successes can be attributed to luck or fateful encounters I have had. The biggest stroke of luck I have had in my business so far was getting into a business accelerator program when all I had was an idea. I’m glad that someone saw my potential and supported and believed in my idea enough to take a chance on me.
