Exploring Life & Business with Brittiny D. Morehead of Eat My Lyrics Publishing Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittiny D. Morehead.

Hi Brittiny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
“Eat My Lyrics” began as a stamp to solidify my poetry when I shared it via social media; I wanted my readers to devour what I had to say. As time moved forward, I was encouraged to create my first book of poetry, The Naked Truth. In taking my steps as a novice in the writing & publishing industry, I ran into many headaches with traditional publishing, as well as self-publishing. I lacked the knowledge and resources to excel, but it was in that moment of desperation that I decided to begin a publishing company of my own.

I registered Eat My Lyrics as my first business in December of 2012, I filed for a DBA; I let life handle me, but I utilized its abuse to catapult me into helping others. My first book sold out at a local Walmart in less than two hours. Each event I attended, I sold out; all I had to do was place my book in their hands, and it was theirs. My words were theirs. Each edible concept, theirs. I knew that my magic was meant for something.

Initially, my company’s purpose was to simply publish my own books, so that I wouldn’t have to worry about the stress of battling for my rights, royalties, and payments as an Author; however- after many sessions of helping friends and fans with their desires to write and publish, I decided to alter my company’s direction to aid others in elevating their voices.

In August of 2020, I chose my company’s entity, LLC. Finally realizing that Eat My Lyrics was in the making for over 8 years, I went for the gold. I launched my company, officially, and then published my second book under it to show writers the excellency they’d receive when signing with me. I have landed some amazing contracts thus far, as I also offer ghostwriting services. My craft, gifted from GOD, has set me up to win. My journey now is assisting others in doing the same.

I inform, educate, and empower every writer that comes to me. I encourage them to never hold back because power is in the tongue, but so is freedom. Freedom dwells in the art of words. Today, I help writers reach their audiences and ensure that their readers devour what they have to say.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a Publisher is surely not a piece of cake; you must be knowledgeable in every aspect in order to service your clients efficiently and effectively. The fact that I enjoy the publishing process makes it all worth it. What’s tough is my company being a one-woman show. I handle the contracts, editing and embellishments, cover designs, marketing tools, submissions, communications with third parties, – every little thing.

Another area that can be challenging is working with printing companies; will they provide quality printing? Will my books arrive carefully packaged?, Am I going to have to wait weeks for my order(s) to come due to COVID-19?- it is all a process. I reassure my clients that patience is key and that everything will fall into place, especially if I have anything to do with it, but it definitely adds pressure, and can be challenging at times.

The unknown is also a struggle. In the writing & publishing industry, you must be able to trust those in which you may do business with. I fear ever being placed in a position where someone brings me content that isn’t theirs- which is why contracts are imperative. Every encounter matters. Being knowledgeable and meticulous in receiving ones’ content matters.

And let us not forget about those late nights. I work full time for a company providing services to individuals who have intellectual disabilities; managing my time to function as an employee AND a business owner after I clock out is stressful.

I constantly have to remember the goal- to operate in my greatness, full-time, one day soon. I stay up late in order to meet my deadlines, and I completely forget about having a personal life. I always choose my business first; I am learning that working, creating, and operating in moderation will allow me to successfully transition from employee to business owner, partner, friend, daughter, granddaughter, sister, and so on.

The obstacles and challenges are literal paths to success if you pay attention, take heed, and listen.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Well, I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure on May 17, 2021; two days after my partner and I graduated from college. I was 29, afraid that I’d never get to see my 30th birthday. My feet were swelling so big that I could barely walk, and I had episodes that resulted in hospital visits, night terrors, and months of pain. I guess what’s surprising to me now is that yes, I still have it, yes, it still hurts and yes, I am still afraid of dying, but I want my life. I fight to be here; to dream, to inspire, to live, and to take back every second of my life that I can. I honestly don’t even know how I would’ve made it through without my partner; her old-school, unconditional love has helped me stay strong. It’s hard to stay persistent because having Congestive Heart Failure means that my body hurts, swells, and gets extremely tired very fast, and that I must tap out when I don’t want to sometimes; but it’ll never be what stops me from pressing forward.
I try so hard to elevate myself, so that I may pave the way for my family, make my father and grandmother proud, and thank my partner for holding my hands and feet through it all. My mother, who is deceased now, also had Congestive Heart Failure; she taught me how to dream. She was the greatest dreamer of us all, but when she became ill, her dreams faded just as quickly as she did; I then made it my business to make her believe again. Ten days before she passed, I placed my first book in her hands… she lit up the room with her excitement, in awe of me; my mission was accomplished. I remember this moment every time I doubt myself.

I come from a family of 11 siblings, myself and my twin being the oldest; I want them all to see me win so that they will believe they can win too. My goal is to utilize my platform to create an abundance of wealth in which will allow me to employ my family, loyal friends, and gifted baristas at my future coffee bar. I registered this business in May of 2020. I have spoken it into existence, so it shall be. With guidance from my loving partner of 9 years, who specializes in financing, support from my family and friends, and GOD’s will- I will conquer this mission too.

Fun fact: I am absolutely obsessed with Tyler Perry and everything he encompasses. I speak about him almost daily to everyone in my life. I even have conversations on the phone with my grandmother; we laugh about how I’ll be crying and squeezing him when I meet him, and how he’s going to get a kick out of how crazy she is when he meets her. My partner and I literally have numerous dreams about my encounters with him; we woke up just the other day, excited to tell one another that we both dreamt of Tyler Perry- on the same night! How in sync is that? I yelled and danced because its confirmation to me. I’ve spent time at work with my friends, talking about him and what I’d like to say when I see him, after I calm down of course- they gas me up every single time. I told my father that I was going to send him my latest book, he held it in his hands as if it were gold and confirmed that I should do just that.

My grandmother believes in me, my father believes in me, my siblings believe in me, my friends believe in me, and my partner believes in me- she’s a realist, so her belief means a lot to me; they make me feel like I’ve already made it. I long to work with Tyler Perry soon. I have also spoken this dream into existence and cannot wait to live in it. I encourage you to dream a dream too.
