Exploring Life & Business with Erica Murphy of ELM Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Murphy.

Hi Erica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
To be honest, I sat on this idea for a while. Back in college, I studied Architecture, but, long story short, I ended up graduating with a completely different degree. However, I am a creative at heart and interior design has always been my first love. Last year, through a lot of prayer, I wanted to come up with a way to get back to what I truly love to do. To get started was the hardest part, but I remember sitting in my living room for hours and started creating mock-ups, concepts, designs, the ideas just kept flowing! It was in that moment, I knew my passion for interior design never left, my love for creativity never left, it’s all divine timing. My passion to help people and my passion for design are the reasons why I created ELM Interiors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like obstacles and challenges don’t get talked about enough! I’m learning there is no such thing as a smooth road to success. If we didn’t face opposition, how would we learn and grow, right? My biggest challenge is learning that when it comes to business, it’s not personal, it’s business. I’m learning my boundaries, my standards, and my value when it comes to entrepreneurship. For example, I had a potential client that I was so excited about and thought it would have been an awesome project to be a part of, but they backed out. I was crushed. I immediately started taking it personal and doubting my work, and overthinking and felt so discouraged, I started second-guessing myself. Literally, the next week, I had a client book my largest design package, and loved working together, the project turned out beautifully! What I learned from that was, not every client is going to be the right fit for you or your business and that’s okay. Never doubt or second guess your talents, your gifts, your knowledge based off of the rejection or opposition you may face during this journey. That lesson was confirmation that what’s for you truly is for you and what’s meant for you will not pass you by!

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I believe that’s what this entrepreneurial journey is all about, the lessons learned. The toughest one yet is sticking to my business standards no matter the prospect. Through lessons learned, I know now that not every potential client is right for your business. You have to consider this no matter how bad your creative side just wants to do the work. Sometimes the hardest decisions are the best decisions for your business. I am constantly reminding myself that it’s not about who doesn’t value you or your business, it’s about you valuing yourself and your business. You’re an expert in your field who provides a solution to a problem. That is my daily affirmation along this journey!
