Hi Susan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I LOVE MY JOB! Except, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle to be able to do what I love the most, give! I want to give all I have to my clients and my team molding the market of luxury design to invest back into my community and make a difference. I have always said, I don’t give because I want to, I give because I can’t help it. The passions that fuel my drive revolve around a solid foundation of faith, family, community, and good old-fashioned “fingers in the dirt.” I will always work side-by-side with my clients and my team. People often ask why I don’t have an office or a desk, short answer – my work is in the homes I design, so that’s where you’ll find me! “The Spirit of Living is in the Giving” is the motto that summarizes my purpose for doing what I do. I live to share my heart and talents with the world around me. My design firm, Susan Semmelmann Interiors, has grown leaps and bounds in three short years. We have 70 projects currently in the works, which is beyond humbling. But it isn’t an overnight success story. When I launched my brand in March of 2019, I brought 23 years of experience in design and construction to the table. Armed with my experience and a crystal-clear vision, I stepped out in faith to begin my new adventure with zero clients and a handful of employees willing to join my journey. Our numbers quickly increased, and fast-forward to our current need to hire more designers and key staff to manage our growing client list. It’s been a steep learning curve, but worth every minute.
I’ve never been one to approach life with a formula. Formulas become restrictive; they don’t leave room for the rerouting that often happens when trusting God with a plan. I like to move through life and experience the days as they come. I have no aspirations of “arriving” – I believe that if I arrive, I may stay there, and I never want to stop growing. I adore my work, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m launching my dream later in my life, and it is the most amazing experience that I hope will inspire others, it’s never too late, I will always be in process, and that makes life a grand adventure!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are definitely challenges to scaling a business the right way, but challenges are always growth opportunities. I truly believe that the quality of life lies in how you choose to see it. It’s all about perspective. Difficulties are guaranteed, and when they come, they reveal character. It’s so crucial to safeguard integrity no matter what comes our way. My primary objective when building my business is to maintain loyalty, relationship, and connection within my team. If the focus remains on the importance of core values, the work will always reflect a high level of excellence, which results in a trusted brand. My business has grown rapidly over the past three years, which is wonderful and exhilarating, but also a little like drinking from a fire hydrant! Growing a like-minded and like-hearted team and business network is no small task. It’s a daily investment into my people of our core values and what we stand for, our mission, and our purpose. To give, to love, and to go light the world with our hearts. Our clients become family, and it’s crucial that as we expand, we don’t lose sight of our foundation and purpose as we care for the relationships around us. It feels like taking a trust fall, knowing that each time I have a need and take a step, God puts the right people and partners in place at just the right time.

Susan Semmelmann Interiors is a turn-key design firm. We have the ability to walk our clients from construction through completion—soup to nuts. We provide many levels of custom consultation and design options, as well as hundreds of top-quality vendor lines offering art, décor, and furnishings. With an eye on supply-chain issues, we are focused on diversifying product access and availability to cover our clients’ needs, including designing our own high-end furniture manufacturing of items you have never seen! Our team envisions and creates beautiful one-of-a-kind feature elements that can be incorporated into a home during the construction phase of design. Floor-to-ceiling feature walls, fireplace surrounds, ceiling details, cabinetry, tile design, and integrated lighting are a few examples of our construction detailing options. We recently completed an industrial-style project with a stunning copper range hood – it was sketched on a napkin and brought to life! We offer an in-house line of gorgeous custom drapery and bedding with luxury fabrics hand-picked by our team and purchased directly from the mills. These fabrics are also used in endless styles and combinations for custom upholstery of sofas, chairs, and accent pillows to create a seamless look that is perfectly polished and beautifully buttoned-up. For clients with a specific design in mind, we manufacture beds, benches, ottomans, headboards, and ottoman coffee tables as part of our exclusive offering. We custom craft these pieces to each client’s size, style, design, and material specifications. In other words, if you can dream it, we can build it!
Any big plans?
While we build dreams for our clients, we are also building something exciting in Fort Worth! When I began this journey, I was initially nervous about taking on 2,300 square feet of office space, wondering if I would be able to sustain it. Now, Susan Semmelmann Interiors has a 10,000 square foot building on Vickery Boulevard, and in the process of acquiring another building to hold all the orders! We are beyond excited! The Vickery location will house our firm offices as well as Fort Worth Drapery and Fort Worth Design Studio. The concept is to open these resources to the public, in addition to online availability through our manufacturer, and give other designers more options to offer their clients. I’m passionate about sharing what I have to help others…help others! Our team operates with one goal in mind; to make each client know they are the most valuable part of the process. Susan Semmelmann Interiors is 100% invested in making our clients’ dreams a reality. We are being trusted with their hearts’ desire for their homes.
