Exploring Life & Business with Theresa Moody of Life & BeYOUnd Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Moody.

Hi Theresa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Counseling has been my passion since I was a little girl. Of course, as I was younger, I did not understand what a counselor was, I just knew that I enjoyed helping my friends with their problems. As I grew older, I began to tap more into what I would want to do with counseling long-term. Life & BeYOUnd Counseling started off as a dream when I graduated from college with my Master’s Degree back in 2016. The vision started as a nonprofit organization to help underserved youth living in urban communities. The ultimate goal is to establish a counseling recreational center in Dallas where individuals, couples, and families have an outlet for counseling resources and after-school programs. The name “Life & BeYOUnd” originally came from a conversation that I always have with my mother and I adopted her initials (LB). She would always tell me to focus on being MYSELF and not to worry about anything else. A new vision for life beyond your current circumstances has the sole purpose of “Be YOU, not who you THINK they want you to be.”~ Theresa Moody

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As I am still within my first year, I have faced many challenges through trial and error. Between finding the appropriate office space, and making sure I have credentialing and billing taken care of, there has been a ton of struggles. Never once have I thought about giving up, but this has been an overwhelming journey. I think the biggest struggle is patience. I set high expectations for myself in my first year of business, but I didn’t factor in the challenges that would come along the way. Luckily, I have a few amazing counseling friends who have started their practice and have found support in connecting with other business professionals to learn the practical steps for building my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over several years of experience with counseling older adults, young adults, and children & adolescents. I have served as a mobile counselor, traveling to clients’ homes offering services, providing case management from drug felony courts, entering public and charter schools providing behavioral interventions along with servicing individual and married couples through church organizations. I have facilitated several group counseling sessions involving teen moms, conflict resolution, anger management, and Christian singles groups. I am skilled in the following areas of anxiety, depression, marital and relationship problems, and stress management. I am equipped to provide individual, couples, and small group counseling to diverse populations While volunteering at a Christian counseling center, I have gained experience in working with married couples, providing coping skills for building self-esteem, demonstrating the building blocks of communication which leads to healthy intimate relationships along with co-facilitating pre-marital workshops. I have a passion for helping individuals gain an overall sense of positive emotional health and continue to promote the benefits of mental health counseling.

During my time counseling, I have had the opportunity to further my education in pursuing my doctoral degree in organizational leadership with an emphasis in behavioral health. While completing my dissertation, I have established my own private practice in counseling by the name of Life & Beyound Counseling. Through these endeavors, I have sharpened my awareness, knowledge, and skills in the mental health counseling profession and remain a service to all mankind.

You are the expert over your own life. I am just a listening ear to help guide you along the way while you navigate through obstacles presented before you. Your season of “change” is temporary. Let us work together in identifying the reality of WHO YOU ARE and accepting the imperfections that uniquely define your character.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I follow many mental health therapists on Instagram. It allows me to gain insight and gather more skills and tips. I also listen to JC Chronicles podcast. Super entertaining and informational! Black Mental Health Matters is a great read, The Unapologetic guide to black mental health is also one of my top faves! I also love to journal. One of the journals that helps me is the therapeutic journal where I process my own feelings after advocating and supporting others.
